One by one, each aspect of the evidence and the suspects pushed Adi back to his past. When Adi was the closest to the truth, he got shot by Karmath Thind. While he was admitted to the hospital because of this, Malini grew distant from him. It was not intended, but it was brought to Malini's realization that her parents were killed by Adi.
