After being in several orphanages, she was adopted at the age of seven and moved to the United States, where both of her legs were amputated above the knee. At the age of 13, she began rowing, and from that point on, her career as an all-around athlete took off. At the 2012 London Paralympics, she became the first American to win a bronze medal in rowing. Shortly after, she began competing in winter sports, winning silver, and bronze medals in Nordic skiing at the 2014 Sochi Paralympics. At the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Paralympics, she won two golds and one bronze in Nordic cross-country skiing and two silvers in biathlon, making her name known around the world.
