As a result of her efforts the Children's Television ...See more'In Spite of it All' is the story about the achievements of Dr. Ollye Brown Shirley, a Mound Bayou native, whose actions changed the flavor of educational television in Mississippi. As a result of her efforts the Children's Television Network came to Mississippi and the Southeast to show Sesame Street to an audience that believed that Black and White children should never appear on the same screen; and certainly not in a manner which showed Blacks in a positive manner. Despite the fact that Dr. Shirley was initially banned from teaching in the Jackson Public Schools, she went on to not only teach but also to serve as President of the JPS School Board. Through her efforts the Confederate flag was removed from public schools. Written by
