At the center of the ballet is not a writer but a choreographer. The juxtaposition of thinking and feeling, of reason and sensuality, exemplified in the story, is reflected in the ballet. For the sad but beautiful story, John Neumeier draws on the music of two of the most important composers: Johann Sebastian Bach and Richard Wagner.
