This film abstractly explores the relationship between Nina and Trepleff in what has been perhaps Chekov's most famous work. In the original play, the two characters have a Romeo and Juliet love affair only to have Nina leave him for another man. Trepleff grows increasingly isolated and when he realizes their love is over, commits suicide. The film begins with a writer in the hospital trying to write but not succeeding. Then he remembers his love for Nina and begins to write about their love. Through the writing he begins to remember that their love is gone and he wonders what happened and why their love failed. The final scene reveals that she left him for another man and is gone forever. Written by
