Attracted by the prospect of a high salary, these 21st century slaves find themselves forced to work fourteen hours a day in sometimes inhuman conditions, under constant surveillance and far from their families. As for their income, most of it is taken by the North Korean state. This system benefits Pyongyang, which finances its nuclear program in particular, but also agribusiness and construction companies.
