Lisa, who owns the local mill is furiously jealous as she too is in love with Elvino. Unknown to her family and friends, Amina is a somnambulist and when Count Rodolfo checks into the inn she enters his bedroom at night and is found there in the morning asleep. Elvino is disgusted and decides to marry Lisa. However, the Count asserts Amina's innocence to the skeptical villagers, explaining the phenomenon of sleepwalking.
