Although Elisabeth is aware of the importance of an heir to the throne, she has been trying unsuccessfully to approach her husband for years, and finally, under the influence of Ulrich Cillei, she resorts to a much darker solution. Meanwhile, the Hungarian noble houses are also expanding their power, convincing the new king that their soldiers should not be called into arms outside the country's borders. When Murad launches a military campaign against the castle of Smederevo in Serbia, Hungarian help arrives only in the person of Hunyadi, while the nobility is camped on the border not suspecting that they are putting themselves in a danger greater than fighting.
