Michele, puppet son of a declining nobility, manipulates and commands his fictitious bourgeois friends, Ettore and Leo, to avenge the love, now gone, of Mariagrazia. In this eternal chase, each character chases their authentic existence, which eludes them with terrifying ease. Thus, their entire lives become vacuous, object-like. Only a cruel glimmer of honesty can shake the gilded cage, so far with walls far too thick to be demolished.
