Emotional Regulation Medication (ERM) is mandatory and effectively removes almost all outward displays of emotion. Art, music, love, race, and religion are viewed as threats to the rigid emotional regulation that governs society. As citizens age, the ERMs used to control emotions stop working, so they are moved to a "senior center," where they are hidden from society. Under the watchful eyes of his government-employed father, dutiful mother and an ever-present surveillance society, Ethan, a dedicated and selfless young man must complete the task, and test, of moving Oliver Hildebrand to a senior center before Ethan can take his place in society.
