When she moved to the United States at the age of 6, her young age and the drastically different environment caused her to go through intense cultural assimilation. She abandoned a lot through this process - including her language, her original name, as well as her relationship with her Grandfather, who stayed in China after Alice immigrated. All seems to be well in Alice's life until her grandfather, whom she has not spoken with for over a decade, comes to visit and the pair has to spend a weekend alone with each other. His traditional Chinese values and beliefs cause clashes between him and Alice immediately. These conflicts dredge up old unresolved feelings and pushes Alice to think again about the consequences of her past decisions. With the lack of a common language, a decade worth of miscommunication, and the abundance of cultural and generational difference, Alice and her grandfather are in for a weekend that is nothing but peaceful and harmonious.
