My sights were set, and as it does so often do when I fixate, the obsession drove me nearly mad. I developed an immediate disdain for Anna's father for pulling her away from me, and even my new friend Edmund distanced himself, sensing that any reminder of him would also be a reminder of her. They closed the house on the island, and Edmund began working exclusively from Charleston. That two-hour distance felt like it might as well have been the distance to another world as it meant that I could not see Anna each day.
