Barely Legal's label Pretty Weird returns for its third instalment and sees host to iconic UK Dubstep producer, Silkie, with a retrospective two track EP of Dubstep sounds and UKG Techno flavour.
'Don't DJ For Free' is a steppy Dubstep record, with heavy nods to the sound that originally brought Silkie to the forefront of the genre; originally made in 2006 outside Kromestar's Grandma's house in South London whilst drinking Dragon Stouts, the track file was lost, only existing as a rip from a few underground pirate radio stations of the time. Sampling Martin Lawrence from the classic 90's movie 'House Party', at a time when many promoters were trying to book DJs for free without appreciating their hard work, this 2018 version see's a recreation of the lost track with a message that still remains true 12 years on.
On the B side, 'Rhythm Junkie' combines the sounds of early Dubstep, UKG and Detroit Techno at 140 BPM with effortless style. As a direct response to his 2010 Deep Medi release 'Bass Junkie', Silkie moves the emphasis from sub-bass exploration to focus on the rhythmic elements of the track. The ever evolving drum patterns allow a seamless blend between the harder UK style and the Detroit Dub synths, with serious nods to icons such as El-B and Martyn. This release does retrospectively properly and with true class; if you're looking to be musically transported back to 2006 this well crafted EP is suited for you.
