This test is to evaluate the soil composition of in-ground beds. Directions below.1️⃣ Dig a hole about 8 inches deep and scoop soil into a mason jar filling it about 1/3 to 1/2 full. (If needed, sift the soil first to remove debris using a colander or mesh sieve). 2️⃣ Add water to the jar about 3/4 full. 3️⃣ Shake the jar for 2-3 minutes and let it settle for at least 48 hours. Notice the layers of sand, silt, and clay. The heaviest and largest soil particle is sand and should be at the bottom. Next are smaller particles, silt, then clay being the smallest of the three, which should be on the top layer. You may notice organic matter above the layer of clay and floating on top as pictured. The ideal soil composition or “loam” for growing most plants is 40% sand, 40% silt, and 20% clay.The results in this jar look about 60% sand, 33-35% silt, and about 5-7% clay. This is more of a sandy loam that drains well, but won’t retain moisture and nutrients well. We will be amending it with organic compost and worm castings to improve the texture. In general, 1-3 inches of compost is sufficient and can be applied on top. Tilling is not necessary and will only disturb soil organisms. If you have a new bed with very compacted soil, you can loosen it with a pitchfork then work in 3-4 inches of compost (30% maximum of your soil). After that, you may not have to loosen the soil again. Keep adding compost on top annually to establish healthy soil. Nicht nur die Regalbretter, sondern auch die Rückwand des Siebes lässt sich dann zum Einhängen von allerlei Utensilien und Gartendeko verwenden - Wie findet Ihrs? Ich hab auch noch ne schlichte Variante gewerkelt und diese Unikate wie gewünscht in den Shop gestellt (link in Bio- wie es so schön heißt 🤭) Damit wünsche ich Euch einen schönen Start ins verlängerte Wochenende!
