Dance is a performance art form consisting of purposefully selected sequences of human movement. This movement has aesthetic and symbolic value. Dance can be categorized and described by its choreography, repertoire of movements, its historical period or place of origin. Theatrical and participatory dance both may have special functions, whether social, ceremonial, competitive, erotic, or sacred. Athletics having a dance-like quality include synchronized swimming and many others.
