The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability (Flashpoint Press)
Incredible book. One of the most thought-provoking books that I have ever read.
Bistro Cooking
I love this book. It taught me the how and why of simple, but elegant French cooking, and I will always own and love this book.
Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles Cookbook: Strategies, Recipes, and Techniques of Classic Bistro Cooking
This and "Bistro Cooking" by Patricia Wells are the only French cookbooks that I ever find myself using. Tony's no b.s. tone, and "Hey numbnuts" approach to instruction are oddly inspiring. Nothing new or nouveau here--this is a restaurant and cookbook that delights in its old school ways, and we are all the better for it. The basic pastry crust is the only pie crust that I use now--it always works. All of the recipes I have used have worked, now that I think about it.
Low & Slow: Master the Art of Barbecue in 5 Easy Lessons
My buddy Gary wrote this thoroughly entertaining, and I think revolutionary book that tells you how to successfully BBQ at home. If you enjoyed the tone of Anthony Bourdain's "The Les Halles Cookbook" you will enjoy Gary's snarky, but warm tough love approach.
