The river is usually brown from topsoil washed down with the rains, but in times of low-rainfall a spring high tide will wash clean sea water into the river mouth.

Murray River (Ngarrindjeri: Millewa, Yorta Yorta: Tongala), South-Eastern Australia, is 2,508km in length and is Australia’s longest river. It has its source at Cowombat Flat in the Australian Alps and its mouth at the Murray Mouth near Goolwa, South Australia. Its tributaries include 5 of the next 6 longest rivers of Australia. The catchments of these rivers form the Murray–Darling basin which covers about one-seventh the area of Australia.

Researchers from Brazil's National Observatory said the subterranean river is thought to be 3,700 miles long, about the same length as the Amazon on the surface.
