As an exhibition of works – Cy Twombly & Friends – goes on sale in Paris to coincide with the Paris+ by Art Basel international art fair, we take a closer look at the origins of the artist's career, the company he kept and the secrets of his studio.

Have you ever been inspired by a work of art and wanted to create something like it? Noticing what you are drawn to in an another artist's work and putting your own spin on it is the first step in finding your own style. In this week's video, I explore the work of Cy Twombly, an American artist known for his large-scale, mostly neutral paintings that employ scribbles and calligraphic elements. And then I show how I adapt some of those elements to my own painting.

In the summer of 1968 Cy Twombly painted a sequence of five diagrammatic paintings to which he gave the name Synopsis of a Battle.
