Arawak Anacaona (1474-1503). Taino caicica (chief) of Jaragua. Negotiated with Christopher Columbus when he arrived in southwest Haiti. Fought off Spanish conquerors. Noted for her attempt to make peace between the Spaniards and the Tainos. Was captured and hung by Nicola De Ovando. Also celebrated as a composer of ballads and narrative poems (areitos). Considered one of the first Haitian heroes.
