⚠️ Routes of Med Admin Tidbits • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • 👄 Mouth "PO": position client upright to avoid aspiration, never crush extended-release/enteric coated meds, and verify if it should be taken with food • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • 💉 Parenteral "injection": closely monitor for IV site complications (phlebitis, infiltration, extravasation, infection) • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • 🧴Skin: ALWAYS remove old patch before applying a new one to avoid overdose • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • 👁️ Eye: Do not dispense eye drops directly onto the cornea, administer in corner of conjunctival sac • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • 👂 Ear: <3 yrs: pinna DOWN & BACK, >3 yrs: pinna UP & OUT • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • 👃 Nose "Inhalation": have client blow their nose before admin & offer tissues • ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ • 🩲 Rectal: position client in SIMS & have patient remain on side
