I just taught a bunch of gardeners this week how to break all the rules they’ve been taught about gardening and grow 10x more this year because of it. Wanna join the club?! 76K views · 4.8K reactions | No plant brings such complicated opinions as yarrow. Due to its potential for aggressiveness, it can be despised by some—despite its being a circumboreal plant (with varietals native to almost the entire planet). This is understandable, as most of us don’t like a garden bully (think mint, argh!). And it’s also quite complicated to determine which varietal is native (though in my area the white are closest to what is “straight native”). But the evidence of tachinid flies, ladybugs, hoverflies and lacewings (these are the heavy hitters of beneficial insects!) that the yarrow attracts is indisputable. Even this varietal, which is a hybrid cultivar called “firefly peach skies,” is swarming with beneficials each summer. This varietal also is less likely to take over, especially if deadheaded. I do have a separate patch of the straight white varietal in an area where I’m letting it creep and take over, without worrying about it becoming problematic. Using natives in perimeter landscaping around the production garden is a great way to balance out the garden ecosystem! Plus, the dried leaves of yarrow can be used to help stop wound bleeding and has lots of other benefits when made into tinctures or salves. What’s your opinion on yarrow? I have a whole YT video on growing tips, just comment “tips” and I’ll send you the link. ❤️ #yarrow #garden #ecosystem #sustainable #beautiful | Blossom and Branch Farm | Facebook
