ScrapHappy - August 2026

Welcome to Scrap Happy Day where we post about the scrappy projects we've worked on over the past month.

Be sure to check out what everyone else has done with their scraps this month - KateEvaSue, Lynda, Birthe, Turid, Tracy, JanMoira, SandraChrisAlysClaireJeanDawnGwen, Sunny, Kjerstin, SueL,  Vera, Ann, Dawn2, Carol,  Preeti, VivKarrin, Amo, AlissaTierney, and Hannah

As my eyes have continued to heal, and I once again could see well enough to see to cut fabric for blocks, I started to work on a long-term project that will be a wedding present.   It's made with new fabrics, so won't be featured here.

For my scrappy projects this month, I started with a buttoned pouch, Corner bookmark, and regular bookmark all made from scraps of a line from Moda.   The fabric is a lightweight canvas weight, and the scraps were bought 5 or so years ago at what used to be a fav quilt store for me.  Lace applique was one I picked up here in Phoenix probably about 15 yrs ago.

This mini wall-hanging started with an orphan block, bought 5+ yrs ago at the same quilt store as the above scraps.  Borders and backing were from remnants that I'd found at some point in the past.  Found the hanger online.   This was given as a gift for a cousin who got married 3 weeks ago.

Quilted postcards were the other scrappy projects finished up this month.  Bits of an orphan block, embroidered roses from a denim shirt I cut up years ago, a bit of embroidery from a piece my mom had started decades ago, and a scrap book finding were used for embellishment.   Fabrics were all scraps.
Bits of fabric leftover from previous projects, a silk flower and leave, button, and iron-on butterfly were used for these.
Iron-on appliques and a remnant of lace were used for embellishment.  scraps were leftover from the butterfly quilts of last month.
Tiny lace scraps, more scrapbooking trims, silk flowers, and buttons were used for these 4 cards.  Fabrics were scraps.  The two on the right started with bits of fabric with sayings about friends &B gardening.
And more scraps were used to make the backings for the postcards.  Some were pieced from pits and strips of light colored background fabrics.

Gratitudes:
1. I'm finally coming to the end of a very long 13 1/2  months of dealing with eye issues resulting from the torn retina and all that ensued after that.   Last appt (post op check) is today.

2. So thankful that with all procedures on the eyes are done and that I can finally see well enough to thread my sewing machines and needles!   Now to get back into the flow for cross-stitch.

ScrapHappy - July 2024

Welcome to ScrapHappy day!   Today's the day where we post about all the scrappy goodness we've been working on.   Don't forget to go check out what everyone else has done this month.

KateGun, EvaSue, Lynda, Birthe, Turid, Tracy, JanMoira, SandraChrisAlysClaireJeanDawnGwen, Sunny, Kjerstin, SueL,  Vera, Ann, Dawn2, Carol,  Preeti, VivKarrin, Amo, AlissaLynn, Tierney and Hannah

As for me, I didn't have much time to work on a lot of scrappy stuff due to have 4 commissioned lap quilts that needed to be completed.   Those were finished up last week (well except for the binding on the final one....that was today).

But then my life took an unexpected turn after having an unexpected reaction to an antibiotic given after a root canal.   Seems the med aggravated a tear in my left retina that I didn't know was there causing a nasty floater and blurred vision.  Trip to the eye doc on Monday resulted in a trip to the retina specialist on Wednesday, and then surgery Thursday afternoon.   Came out looking like a ringer for a pirate....lol.

Finally after 2 days I'm back to looking mostly normal and back to sewing because there isn't much else I can do at the moment.

Now mind, I'm not quite sure I'm ready to start cutting fabric with only one eye that is functioning normally at the present, but there are oodles of projects where either I've got precut pieces or are ready to quilt.   So I shouldn't be bored.  Will also be working from home for 3-6 weeks depending on how fast my eye and vision heal.

Knowing I was going to have the surgery I quickly went thru my pink scraps and cut enough strips to piece 4 long strips.   I'll use these as the 2nd border to go around the remnant that will be the center of this quilt.  The black w/multi color stars that is left over from another project will be the first border and binding, and perhaps a third border as well.
The card with the candle features a long ago finished needlepoint candle,  Border on it is a ribbon remnant from my mom's stash.  Background on the cards (5 total) was from a left over piece of shirting from a long ago project.
Back of the cards were made from a couple of remnants in my background stash.

Gratitudes:
1. For the adverse reaction to medication, because it meant the retina tear was found quickly and there should be no lasting damage to the vision in my left eye.

2. For the friends who have been willing to drive me to/from doc appts, surgery and even to Starbucks so I could get a drink there.

3. For the docs who fit me into their schedule and didn't put me off when I said something was wrong.

ScrapHappy August 2023

Lots of time spent working on clearing things out of what had been my dad's house meant not a huge amount time left for me to actually.  I did sneak some in there though.

One of the things I've found in the house are lots and lots of UFO's that my mom had stashed.  These UFO's include needlepoint, crewel, embroidery, and cross-stitch pieces.    Much to my chagrin, some of the UFO's were ones that I had stitched and the apparently abandoned for whatever reason.....oops....

At any rate, I've started working with some of the UFO's I've found at the house,   These two postcards have been completed.   Top one has a faux jeweled trim as the water the fish is swimming in.     All fabrics used in the cards were scraps, and the leaves were ones that had been scavenged at one point.

Finished 3 more of the scrappy string postcards that I started years ago.  Scrap pieces of lace and trims from my stash finished off the fronts of these, and scraps were used for the backs of the cards.

Third piece of needlepoint, finished off into a postcard.   "Framed" with a piece of polka-dot grosgrain ribbon.

And I finished this little piece of cross-stitch.  This was one of my moms UFO's.   And apparently the second on made by the pattern because she had started using leftover bits of thread for it.   I had to dig in my leftover bits of thread to finish off a couple of the colors as well.

And for something different, a couple of scrappy UFO's that I found in my mom's stuff this past week - a grandmother's flower garden started at some point by my great-grandmother on my mom's side of the family.  Hand-pieced, but not much put together on this one.   Am debating about what to do with this one.   Might sell because I'd found another one much further along than this one is.

And a tin full of cut squares.   No blocks pieced so I have no idea what was in the cutter's mind.   I'm not even sure if it was my great-grandmother or my mom.   Will likely do something with these at some point in time.

Gratitudes:
1.  For all the wonderful things that I'm finding as I work in the house.

2.  For the fall being nearer, even if it still hot as blazes here in AZ.

ScrapHappy - May 2023

Not a lot going on this month, but did get more postcards were made this year in between projects for blog hops, both past and present.

The cross-stitch pieces came from three finished pieces I found at the second hand store.  Fabrics in these were all out of either my scraps or my string box.
Backings for the postcards (multiple of the yellow) were both scraps.  Yellow was a larger piece leftover from a FQ I'd cut into at some point.

Got this postcard started with a piece of scrappy patchwork that I'd been given at some point by a quilting friend.  Want to add some words to it, but still thinking about what to say.

These two little pincushions were made with scrap fabric and little candleholders that I'd picked up a couple of years ago in various second-hand stores.  They will end up being used as gifts at some point.

Don't forget to check out what everyone else has been doing with their scraps this month.

Gratitudes:
1. For working a job where I once again have insurance and paid vacation.

2. For being able to travel to visit friends in the Dallas area.

Finishes - 2/23/19

My plans for last week got thrown for a loop when my body decided it wanted to get sick and actually force me to slow down.  =(   After spending the morning Saturday between urgent care and then Walmart waiting my prescriptions to be filled, and then crashing nothing much got done until Saturday.

First up was sewing this teddy bear.  He'll be off to a little one who is a new big brother as of Friday when I deliver dinner to a family at church this week.  Big Bro keeps eyeing the bunny I made Lil Sis, so he needs his own critter.

Got the blocks cut and/or sewn for the next commissioned quilt.  The pieced blocks still need to be trimmed to 9.5" unfinished, but that is for this week.
And I got backgrounds fused for the first set of Easter postcards.  To come are Easter eggs, baskets, and who knows what else.  =)

I also managed to make it by the post office so the two commissions from last week and a set of swap blocks were put in the mail on Thursday when I ran out for early voting.

Gratitudes:
1. For an urgent care office in the next town (none in the town where I live) that is never busy....

2. For friends who bring meals over when I'm not feeling good.
