about

This track is a healing tool both as a personal reflection and future memoire for the children whose time spent with their dads is limited by circumstance(s) beyond their control.

This first verse and hook to this song was written in 2022 by Rahman Jamaal during a residency at Alameda Juvenile Hall where he was working with Jonah Scott (aka Etrnl Entendre) for Rhythmic Mind, a therapeutic songwriting organization founded by Scott to help students process trauma through narrative-based lyrics as a clinical mental health strategy.

During a morning check-in, Rahman shared his verse with Jonah and the group of students. Jonah, who had just become a new father with the recent birth of his son, offered to write a verse as one of several emcees Rahman would approach for a collaborative song on the topic of Fatherhood.

Shortly thereafter, Jonah was diagnosed with advanced Stage 4 colon cancer and had to stop teaching the residency immediately to undergo emergency chemotherapy and radiation. Still determined to complete his verse, but with a new purpose of preserving a message to his newborn son, the song was written and recorded in between treatments, and finally completed in 2024.

Upon mixing and sending to Japan-based producer Cloud 9, they were informed that the original beat they wrote to was no longer available, so a new beat was composed for the song lyrics as they were written. The lyrics are personal and raw, speaking on the importance of the role of fathers in our children's lives--from the effect of being absent to the goal of being present for as long as humanly possible.

Jonah is still battling cancer and a portion of the proceeds for this track will go to support him and his family. Please share with a loved one who can relate.
