Invention of Sugar Cube

Date of Issue : 6 March 2019

Here is a beautiful stamp for tea and coffee lovers featuring sugar cube which was  invented in Czech Republic. The stamp was recently issued on 6th March 2019. Here is the story of its invention !

After the end of the Napoleonic wars, attempts at extracting sugar from sugar beet were resumed in the Habsburg monarchy in the 1820s. The first modern type sugar manufacture in the western part of the Habsburg monarchy was founded in Kostelní Vydří nearby Dačice in the estate of Karel Maxmilián Dalberg in 1829. In 1833, František Grebner, with the financial support of Viennese banker J.B. Puthon, established a sugar refinery directly in Dačice. The Dačice refinery resumed the tradition of the sugar factory in Kostelní Vydří. Dačice sugar was supplied to Southwest Moravia, South and East Bohemia as well as to Austrian borderlands. Sugar was also sold from warehouses of the Dačice refinery established in Vienna, Pest, Lvov, and also in Brno. Jakub Kryštof Rad, the refinery director, established a manufacture of candied fruit, sweets, and chocolate in Dačice in 1841, in which he also involved his wife Juliana, in order to make better use of some of the sugar refinery products.
The difficult-to-use shapes of sugar products, such as cones, hats, or loaves, made Jakub Kryštof Rad to come up with the idea of sugar cubes. Cone-shape sugar was impractical both for business and private use - cones were difficult to pack and easy to break. Also, attempts at cutting an exact amount of sugar were not always successful and a lot of sugar was wasted. The patent for the production of sugar cubes was soon acquired by Prussia, Saxony, Bavaria, Switzerland, and England. An improved form of Rad’s invention is still used by sugar refineries all around the world.

Bombay Cover on New issue from Czech Republic

The Bombay Cover on PRAGA 2018 Stamp

The Czech Republic  issued a postage stamp and a Miniature sheet 0n 8th August 2018 featuring famous Bombay cover during World Stamp Exhibition PRAGA 2018.

The “Bombay” Cover – an Aristocrat of Philately

There are only six covers recorded with the first, “POST OFFICE” issue, printed one at a time from a small plate of two subjects, one a 1d value, in vermilion, the other a 2d, in blue. Three of the covers are single frankings of the 1d value; one is in the British Library (Tapling Collection), another in the Royal Collection (since 1904). The third, known as the “Ball Envelope,” is ex Kanai, and was sold by this firm in the last decade.

A single franking 2d cover to Bordeaux is in the German Postal Museum, while the famous 1d + 2d franking, also to Bordeaux, was the highlight of the Kanai collection, and achieved the highest price ever obtained by a philatelic object, CHF 6’250’000, still the record for any philatelic cover.

Finally the cover which is the subject of this posting, is an unusual item for several reasons: first it was sent in 1850, three years after the issue (all other covers were posted in 1847); second, it was sent eastbound, to Bombay (all the other covers were either used on the island (including a large piece with  the 2d) or to Bordeaux. Third, the quality of the stamps is remarkable: each has four large even margins, very unusual for this issue, and brilliant original colour. Finally, the two stamps differ in impression: the right one is very sharp and clear, the left one a bit heavier and slightly lighter in colour.

Its provenance includes its discovery in 1897 in an Indian bazaar, soon passing through the hands of dealer W.H. Peckitt to Vernon Roberts, later owned (1906) by Worthington, who sold it to Alfred F. Lichtenstein in 1917. It was considered one of the most important items of his collection. When this cover was sold in 1968 as Lot 1 of the Dale-Lichtenstein collection, it brought an astounding $380,000 and ended up, a year later, in the hands of Raymond Weill.

Offered again at auction in 1989 as part of the Weill Brothers stock,  it was bought in for CHF 2’600’000)and subsequently sold to Dr. Chan Chin Cheung, who held it until its sale in 1996 to Guido Craveri, who exhibited it in New York at Anphilex ’96 as one of the Aristocrats of Philately.

Subsequently sold to an unidentified private collector, and soon to be offered by Private Treaty though our company, the “Bombay” cover remains the “ne plus ultra” of condition for this very rare classic issue, and offers as well a great deal of pride (and fame, if desired) for its next owner !

New stamps on Birds

image

Date of Issue : 19 February 2015

Here are new stamps  for bird lovers. Croatian Post released a series of stamps dedicated to exotic birds that are favorite children’s pets. The issue consists of four stamps depicting four kinds of birds: sulpher-crested cockatoo, canary, budgerigar, zebra finch. The philatelic release was unveiled and put into circulation on the 19th of February.

image

Sulpher-crested cockatoos are sociable and playful. They are also demanding birds that need plenty of interaction and cuddle time. They are smart and known for solving puzzles and other games. Sulphur-crested cockatoos can be more independent than other cockatoo species, so get to know your bird’s likes and dislikes. Adult breeder birds of this species are more aloof than those that are hand-raised. Hand-raised babies make the best pets because they develop a more playful attitude and are not demanding pet birds if given enough to do. To keep these pet birds happy, they need at least one hour of playtime a day as well as exercise time with their owner and several more hours of supervised out-of-the-cage time.

The quintessential pet bird, the canary has enjoyed steady popularity for more than a century. Its beautiful song and color and its charming nature have endeared it to many bird enthusiasts. All canaries originate from the same species, but there are three types, or breeds, popular in the United States: color-bred canaries, type canaries and song canaries. Their behavior is active, jaunty, alert and happy.

The budgerigar is a small colourful bird native to Australia. The budgerigar is thought to be a sub-species of parrot, making the budgerigar one of the smallest parrot species in the world. The budgerigar is often called a parakeet or a budgie and the budgie is one of the most popular birds to keep as pets, both in outside aviaries and in cages in homes. Budgerigars are thought to be popular pets due to their small size and brightly coloured feathers.

There are numerous species of finch, but among the most popular as pets are the zebra finch and the society finch. These species are hardy and relatively easy to care for, so are an excellent choice for the new owner. Some of the other finch species are more challenging to care for and are best left for more experienced finch keepers. As an example, the Lady Gouldian finch is a strikingly beautiful, brightly colored finch, but are more difficult to care for and keep successfully than zebra finches.

St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas and St. Adalbert Cathedral is the dominant structure of Prague Castle. It is a three-nave Gothic cathedral with three residential towers and the church of the Archbishop of Prague. The present building was built in several stages, in the years 1344–1419, 1490–1510, 1556–1593, and 1873–1929 (its western part). In the years 1060–1920 it was dedicated to three major Czech saints: St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas and St. Adalbert. Until 1997, the name of St. Vitus Cathedral was used; that is why the abbreviated name became well-established and the cathedral is known by it even in the present time, even though in 1997, the former Archbishop of Prague, Cardinal Miloslav Vlk, restored the original full name.
