I have published here information about stamps from other countries featuring Indian theme. Here is one more stamp from Belgium that features Hindi Script. It is a nice collecting item for those collecting “ Indian theme on foreign stamps”. I am very much thankful to Mr Shrikant Parikh who came across this stamp and published detailed info on his blog : Se-tenant Stamps of India . I am sharing here complete information given by Mr Parikh.
The tab shows designer’s name, Dharmesh Jadeja
In year 2012, Belgium, a small country of Europe issued 5 se-tenant stamps on theme of Calligraphy. One stamp shows Hindi script Ek Dusre ko Likhen meaning Write to Each Other. One must appreciate the depth of design and selection of a theme for the stamps. Incidentally this stamp was used by a thoughtful post-crosser from Belgium to Ahmedabad / India with entire tab, which even shows the name of the designer - Dharmesh Jadeja !!
On 11 February 2012, a set of 5 se-tenant stamps was issued by Belgium Post, depicting Latin, Arabic, Chinese, Hindi and Greek scripts. [details taken from MICHEL Katalog]
Here is a unique stamp from Belgium Post issued on 8th March. The postage stamp released by bpost to celebrate the International Women’s Day held the world record. The stamp with 606 words was recognized “stamp with the largest number of readable words” by Guinness World Records.
The stamp depicts a woman’s face that is composed of integral sentences coming from the “Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women”.
The background of the image entirely consists of text. The stamp designer Ann Bessemans used the Big Vesta font for the text to make it perfectly readable in very small size.
It is the first time bpost is issuing a stamp dedicated to the International Women’s Day. “Bpost already released stamps with women in the lead role, but this is the first one for the International Women’s Day”, said Fred Lens, spokesman for bpost.
As a bonus, the stamp entered the philatelic world history: “We’ve sent our design to Guinness World Records, and it has immediately won in the category “stamp with the largest number of readable words”, says Lens. “The category didn’t exist before, but with 606 words, our record will hopefully just hold out”.

Today is Maha Shivratri (the 'Great Night of Shiva'). It is a Hindu festival celebrated every year in reverence of Lord Shiva all over the country. Greetings to all the readers on this festive occasion.
Mahashivaratri also marks the night when Lord Shiv performed the 'Tandava', the cosmic dance.According to another legend of Samudra manthan, Shiv saved the world from the disastrous effects of a poison that emerged as a by product of churning of sea (Samudra manthan), by consuming whole of it. Shiv could arrest the poison in his throat by his Yogic powers and it could not go down his body. His neck turned blue due to effect of poison on his throat and thenceforth he is also called as Neela Kantha or The blue Throated.
Bpost issued a sheet of 5 stamps from the series “Unusual flora” featuring some plants of the Botanical Garden of Meise.
The Botanical Garden of Meise is one of the largest botanical gardens in the world with an extensive collection of living plants in addition to a herbarium of over 3 million specimens. The current garden was established in 1958 after it moved from the center of Brussels. Researchers at the garden conduct research particularly on Belgian and African plants.
The Botanic Garden contains about 18,000 plant species – about 6% of all known plant species of the world. Half are in greenhouses, the other half, including cultivated and indigenous plants, are outdoors. The gardens are grouped around the castle and lake of the Bouchout domain.
The mission statement of the Botanic garden of Meise specifies the increasing and spreading “the knowledge of plants” and contributions to “the conservation of biodiversity.”
The plants featured on stamps are: Titan arum (Amorphophallus), Pebble plant (Lithops), Monkey cups (Nepenthes), Ant-house plant (Myrmecodia) and Jade wine (Strongylodon).
Hi !
Here are world’s first heat sensitive stamps issued by Belgium Post. These are unique stamps with special features. The color of the tree depicted on stamp changes with increase in the temperature.
The Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (IRM) is celebrating its hundredth anniversary this summer. On this occasion, the Institute has partnered with bpost to present the first Belgian and even world novelty: four thermosensitive stamps depicting the four seasons of the year.
The IRM is celebrating its 100th anniversary on July 31. To mark the event, the Institute cooperated with bpost to issue special stamps printed with a temperature responsive ink.
“This technological innovation is the first Belgian and certainly the world first”, exclaims the spokesman for bpost, Fred Lens. The series consists of five stamps: a stamp depicting the building of the IRM and four heat-sensitive stamps, each representing a tree whose leaf forms the map of Belgium. The foliage is green but when the temperature exceeds 25°, for example if one puts a finger on the stamp, the green layer disappears showing the tree in one of the four seasons (sun, rain, snow, clouds).
New stamps on Music
Belgium post issued a stamp dedicated to traditional music festivals held in open air all around Belgium in summer time. The most famous ones:
Rock Werchter: it’s a Belgian annual music festival held in the village of Werchter, since 1976. It is one of the five biggest annual rock music festivals in Europe (the other four being Exit, Sziget Festival, the Glastonbury Festival and Roskilde Festival). The 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2012 festivals received the Arthur award for best festival in the world at the International Live Music Conference (ILMC). It can host 85,000 guests daily, of which 67,000 combine all four days, to add up to a total maximum of 139,000 different attendees.
Pukkelpop: it’s an annual music festival which takes place near the city of Hasselt, Belgium in mid-to-late August. It is held within a large enclosure of fields and woodland in the village of Kiewit, approximately 7 km north of Hasselt. It is the second largest music festival in the country after Rock Werchter, with an attendance rate of 180,000 over the course of the event in 2009.
Dour Festival: it is an annual music festival in the municipality of Dour, Belgium. Since its creation in 1989, the festival has grown to an attendance of about 144,000 in 2008 (over 4 days). The festival format now consists of 4 days, 6 stages and 200 bands and DJ’s. The festival’s acts come from a wide range of genres, such as: electro, rock, drum and bass, pop, R&B, reggae, house, punk, hardcore, metal, hip-hop, indie, techno and more. The festival attracts a very international and mixed crowd. In January 2010, Dour Festival won the prize for the best medium-sized festival at the European Festival Awards.
Brussels - On March 25, the Belgium Post Office (Bpost) will issue novel chocolate smelling, chocolate tasting stamps. There will be five stamps treated with heat sensitive inks.
The Belgian postal service said: “We have added a chocolate taste to the glue of the stamps. You can taste [it] when you lick it. It was not easy to get the scent and flavor of the dark chocolate right. In the end, people from Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland all worked on it.”
The stamps are being issued to honor and celebrate the Belgiam’s famous chocolatiers and chocolate as a national delicacy. A Telegraph article describes the issue as Willy Wonka-style postage stamps that are in the wacky spirit of the novel by Road Dahl about an eccentric candy maker.
If you sniff the stamps you will smell chocolate and when you lick them to stick them on the envelope they will taste of chocolate. Perhaps people will lick off all the glue and then need to look for a glue stick. Johnny Thijs, the CEO of Bpost crowed:"With such stamps we prove our sense of modernity and innovation."
Not content with their chocolate stamps, Bpost is also planning a series of stamps that will emphasize road safety. These stamps will be printed on "glow in the dark ink". Perhaps people will be encouraged to stick these on their clothing at night, or on backpacks. Another future issue to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Belgium's Royal Meteorological Society will have heat sensitive ink that will reveal a hidden pattern when touched because of the warmth from the fingers.
The five stamps are intended for overseas mail and will cost 6.20 euros .

Philately under the cloud
In the editorial of Vadophil (Issue no. 131-132, Jul.-Oct. 2012), it was stated that “Organised Philately is often linked to a three legged stool; the three legs are philatelists, trade and postal administration”.
Geometrically, three legged stool is very stable even if three legs are of un-equal lengths. In terms of philately, legs could be interpreted as contribution to the promotion of philately.
We need to review the third leg of stool i.e. Postal Administration, which is most important but unfortunately having a cracked leg. A while ago Department of Posts released a glossy and colourful philatelic magazine “Phila Post” with a great funfare in Delhi. Many philatelists from Gujarat and elsewhere from India and, of course, PCI members attended the meeting. Loud announcements were made on the future course of action to promote philately in India and regular release of the magazine through philatelic bureaux all over India. After couple of issues magazine had gone in hibernation.
Response to above
Carefully read the editorial of Vadophil and noted the contents and the expressions of the editor, a veteran, sincere and dedicated philatelist, who himself and the members of Baroda Philatelic Society has been hurt by ill behavior of DOP officials during last few events. The anguish and disappointment of the editor due to ill behavior and dry attitude of DOP can be felt and understood. But this response from DOP officials is experienced every where in India. I personally have experienced it several times. Philatelists are used and thrown.
I understand we are lover of philately and for the sake of it we do or have to do certain deeds which otherwise we would never had even thought of doing . But being lover of philately we must appreciate Love is Love….no expectations…no bargain…..no regrets. We are bound to receive and bear such gestures from DOP. Administrators don't have hearts. Bureaucrats are hard hearted and don't understand and cares for the sentiments.. He must understand there can not be any Dark Day or even Dark Night because philately glows in our heart and mind always, during day and night..
Further, I appreciate editor’s three legs theory of organized philately which as per him states that “Organized Philately is often linked to a three legged stool; the three legs are philatelists, trade and postal administration”.
Here I would like to add one thing that Organized Philately should be linked with all four the legs of a stool as philately is not a still event, it moving, moving from generation to generation. It’s like moving car and for its proper, stable, uniform, speedy, easy and joyful running, 4th wheel is very important. And for me the fourth wheel is "PHILATELIC ADMINISTRATION". Now is the time when there is true need of philatelic administration to not only set right the postal administrations but to organize the philately in better and graceful manner. The need of this administration is Global and not local.
While appreciating his feeling and views on the dry, unwanted and unwarranted behavior of DOP; I would suggest editor and members of Baroda Philatelic Society should come out of it, concentrate on how better they can enjoy philately keeping in mind that there are remote chances of any PERMANENT solution to the administrative attitude of DOP officials.
Here I appreciate Mr. Jhingan’s (Delhi based veteran Philatelist) efforts who has shown that without DOP’s support also, philately can glow, glaze, prosper and enjoyed. Once again, here I feel the urgent need of proper PHILATELIC ADMINISTRATION..... such as formation of PHILATELIC REGULATORY AUTHORITY etc.
Yes, editor’s fresh wind theory of removal of dark cloud is certainly demand of the time. Any way, if fresh wind is not available, let’s plan to refresh the existing clouds . But let the wind of enthusiasm sweep through us and keep us move like Kings…..ultimately it is said that philately is hobby of kings…

India Post is playing a new ball game with philately as there is no issue for Olympic 2012 in the list "Stamp Issue Programmed for the year 2012" , though the other countries have been issuing Olympic stamps to promote the games and enrich the Olympic philately.
