New Stamp on Chess

image

Date of Issue : 10 February 2015

A new Israeli stamp issue dedicated to chess – one of the most prevalent games in the world. The stamp has been already designed and is scheduled to be released on the 10th of February.

Chess is thought to have been invented in India in the 6th century CE and was popular among the Arab nations and in Persia. The game reached Europe around the 10th century, and the modern rules of the game were established there in the 15th century. Since then, this version of the game has spread throughout the world.

Chess is mentioned in the Kuzari, written by medieval Spanish philosopher and poet Rabbi Yehuda Halevi, as well as in writings by Rashi and Maimonides, and Abraham ibn Ezra even dedicated one of his poems to the game. This game has been extremely popular among Jews, who have also had significant achievements in this field. Four of the 16 World Champions were Jewish and three others were half-Jewish.

Jewish excellence in chess is so prominent that the game has been called “the national Jewish game”. Israel was granted the opportunity to host a number of important events: the Chess Olympic Games in 1964 (Tel-Aviv) and 1976 (Haifa), the European National Championship (Haifa, 1989), the World Youth Chess Championship (Jerusalem, 1967), the Team World Cup (Beer Sheva, 2005) and more.

This stamp is being issued to mark the European Individual Chess Championship 2015 which will be held in Jerusalem. The design reflects the connection between chess and Judaism and Israel, as well as chess’ status as Israel’s national sport and its number one representative sport.

Stamp commemorating 'Kuka Movement' of Namdhari Sikhs released

New Delhi, Dec. 24 (ANI): Union minister for Communication and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday released a commemorative stamp to highlight heroic deeds of those engaged in 1857 Kuka movement of the Namdhari Sikhs against the British.

The Kuka Movement marked the first major reaction of the people in the Punjab to the new political order initiated by the British after 1849. The Namdhari Movement, of which the Kuka Movement was the most important phase, aimed at overthrowing the British rule.

Speaking at the occasion, Prasad said that the sacrifices made by people of Punjab will be always remembered. He also said that members of the Kuka Movement raised voice against foreign rule at a time when most people feared barbaric approach of the rulers.

The Kuka Movement evoked the feelings of self respect and sacrifice for the country. They called for boycott of educational institutions of British and argued against laws established by them. They were rigid in their clothing and wore only hand-spun white attire. The Kuka followers actively propagated the civil disobedience. (ANI)

Sagol Kangjei ( Polo )

Sagol Kangjei is the name of the game of polo played in Manipur. Sagol means pony / horse, kang means a ball or round object, and jei is a stick used for hitting. Polo has, for time immemorial, been a game patronised by the royalty and the upper crust of society, not only in India but abroad. However in the state of Manipur, it has always been a game for the common man. It is a seven - a - side game, the players mounted on ponies.

According to a renowned Sanskrit scholar, Pandit Sharma, Manipuri polo goes back to the year 3100 B.C. Other Manipuri scholars trace the game chronologically to many centuries before Christ ( 2000 - 1500 B.C. ), while some place it around 34 A.D. According to Kangjeiron Purana, which is really the history of hockey in the state, polo was first played in Manipur, and therefore, it got the name Sagol Kangjei - sagol ( horse ) and kangjei ( hockey ).

Manipuri polo symbolises the immense cultural heritage of the state, and great efforts have been put made to raise the standard of this popular game. The prominent patrons of the game were King Kyamba and King Khagemba ( 1597-1672 A.D.), and King Chandra Kirti ( 1850 - 1886 A.D.). The latter, especially, is to be credited with popularising the sport in other parts of the world.

The Unit Trust of India largely deals with the mutual fund schemes and thereby popularly known as UTI Mutual Fund all over India. It is managed by UTI Asset Management Company Private Limited which was established on January 14, 2003. -

UTI was set up by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and functioned under its Regulatory and administrative control. It commenced its operations from 1st February, 1964 with the objective of mobilizing savings of the community and providing the small investors with a means of acquiring a stake in the industrial growth of the country. The first scheme launched by UTI was Unit Scheme 64. In 1978, UTI was de-linked from the RBI and the Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI) took over its regulatory and administrative control.

UTI remained the sole vehicle for investment in the Indian capital market for more than two decades, after which, the public sector banks were allowed to enter the foray. The vibrancy and competition increased with the setting up of the Security Exchange Board of India, a regulatory body. The Unit Trust of India Act, 1963 was repealed in 2001. This was followed by the bifurcation of the organization into - Specified Undertaking of Unit Trust of India (SUUTI); and UTI Mutual Fund (UTIMF) on 1st February, 2003.

Commemorative Stamp on Liver Transplantation in India - 4th November 2014

The Department of Posts released a commemorative stamp on Liver Transplantation in India on 4th November 2014 on the occasion of 15 years of Liver Transplantation in India. The Stamp was released by Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of Communications & IT in a function held at Hotel Lalit, New Delhi. Shri S. K. Sinha, Member Postal Services Board and Dr. Pratap C. Reddy Chairman Apollo Hospital Group were also present in the function.

image

The only definite treatment for liver failure is a liver transplantation. During a liver transplant, the diseased liver is removed and replaced with a healthy one. The first successful Liver Transplantation was performed on a child in 1967. Since then, there has been tremendous progress in the complicated process of liver transplantation, which in 1983 was confirmed to be a valid procedure in cases of end stage liver disease (ESLD), in a consensus by the National Institutes of Health. The first successful liver transplantation in India was performed at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi on 15th November, 1998 and since then around 4,500 such transplants has been done in the country.

The liver performs various functions that are essential for the well being of the body. Two types of liver transplant are possible: living donor transplant and cadaveric transplant. In living donor transplant, a portion of the liver is removed from a healthy person and placed into the patient. Since the liver has the capacity to regenerate, both the donor and the recipient liver portions grow to a normal size in a few weeks. In a cadaveric transplant the donor is a brain dead person.
