The rocking horse - the nostalgic toy as a motif for a commemorative Christmas stamp

This vintage stamp shows a drawing of a rocking horse, a Christmas ball and a gift. In red letters it wishes „Merry Christmas“.

The rocking horse stands as a symbol of toys that have lasted for generations. Already in ancient times, small horses on wheels were used for trailing or mounting. The current runners have been known since about the 17th century. It is believed that they were invented in the USA and came to Europe in the 19th century. Even then, the rocking horse was on many a wish list, but not all children could get one - that's why the rocking horse is also symbolic of unfulfilled dreams.

Traditionally, they are made of wood, but they are also available with plush fur - or not as a horse at all, but as a completely different animal. Even today, they are the ideal toy for children. Not only does a rocking horse stimulate the imagination, it also promotes motor development and trains the sense of balance. And even if it is not a present under the tree this year, the rocking horse will certainly find its way into Christmas rooms as a decorative tree ornament or as a gingerbread motif.

The following winter scenes are depicted on the December stamps 2021 in the form of papercuts: A mole with candy cane and rucksack, 2 love-struck blue tits under a mistletoe, a fox with a fluttering scarf and envelope, a mouse in a red postal car, a badger decorating the Christmas tree with his scarf, 2 mice decorating a peacock, a squirrel pushing a sleigh with gifts and treats, a squirrel, hare, dog and owl by the skating pond, a hare with a bunch of Christmas roses, and a fallow deer decorated as a Christmas tree.

All the animals are depicted in a friendly winter landscape, a cosy animal forest with brightly coloured picture elements. Sometimes a larger scene can be seen, other times all the attention goes to one animal. There are three types of sky: light blue, bright blue and dark blue for the morning, afternoon and night respectively. Each December stamp tells its own story. Together, the ten December stamps form a whole because the animals are all, in one way or another, engaged in the theme of Christmas, winter or December.

The traditional and popular Christmas stamps are presented in oriental style this year, which is reflected in the choice of colours and detailing in gold.

On the stamp "The Guiding Star" (face value: CHF 0.85), the star that pointed the way to Bethlehem for the Three Wise Men takes centre stage. "The Shepherd" (face value: CHF 1.00), symbolically represented by a sheep, refers to the shepherds who, after an angel proclaimed the birth of Jesus, also set out to see the Son of God lying in a manger.

The "Holy Spirit" (face value: CHF 1.50), who had come upon Mary as the Spirit of God and made her conceive her son nine months earlier, appears in the form of a dove like in the Bible. A candle flanked by a plant represents "The Gifts" (face value: CHF 2.00), which the Wise Men from the East offered to the Saviour.

24 carat gold stamps from Netherlands

Dutch East Indies 1945-2020

Date of Issue : 15 August 2020

Here are three beautiful extraordinary golden stamps from Dutch Post, The first new stamp shown above commemorates the 75th anniversary of the laying down of arms by the Japanese army. This brought an end to over 41 months of occupation of the former Dutch colony. The second one issued on 21st June features Miffy's 65th Birthday. The third one issued on 20 January 2020 features Operation Market Garden.

On 15 August 1945, World War II officially ended for the Kingdom of the Netherlands. On that day, Emperor Hirohito of Japan officially announced that his country had surrendered to the Allies. This also marked the end of the war in the Dutch East Indies. The occupation by Japan of the former Dutch colony began when the Dutch and Allied forces surrendered on 8 March 1942. It took until 1988 before an official national commemoration of the end of the war could take place in the Dutch East Indies. Since then, we commemorate all of the victims of the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies each year on 15 August at the Indies Monument in The Hague. The official name of this ceremony is the Nationale Indiëherdenking (‘National Indies Commemoration’). It is one of the three national commemorations that take place in the Netherlands, in addition to National Remembrance Day on 4 May and Holocaust Memorial Day on the last Sunday in January.

Miffy’s 65th Birthday

Date of Issue : 21 June 2020

Miffy’s 65th Birthday

This year  Miffy’s 65th birthday is being celebrated. Out of all the characters in Dick Bruna’s picture books, Miffy is the most beloved all over the world. To celebrate this special anniversary, PostNL has issued  a unique limited edition golden stamp. These postage stamps are marked 'Nederland 1', the denomination for items up to 20g in weight destined for the Netherlands.

Miffy was ‘born’ in 1955, when Dick Bruna told his eldest son a bedtime story about a white rabbit. Over the past 65 years, out of all the characters in Dick Bruna’s books, Miffy has become the most famous and popular across the world. In the Netherlands she is called Nijntje, but elsewhere she has been known as Miffy since 1996. Many children recognise themselves in Miffy and her adventures. She is uncomplicated, innocent, positive and open to new experiences.

Market Garden 1944-2019

Date of Issue : 20 January 2020

The first stamp in the series features Operation Market Garden. It was one of the largest military operations of World War II, with airborne landings by American and British paratroopers at Arnhem and Nijmegen.

Operation Market Garden was a plan masterminded by British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery. He wanted to capture the Germans in the Netherlands in order to clear the way to Germany. 17 September 1944 marked the beginning of one of the largest military operations of World War II. The aim of the airborne landings by British and American paratroopers was to seize important bridges over the Meuse, Waal and Rhine. Ground forces moved from the south towards Arnhem to seize areas from the Germans. However, resistance from the Germans was greater and fiercer than expected. Only a small number of British paratroopers managed to reach the Rijnbrug (‘Rhine bridge’) at Arnhem. The ground forces took Nijmegen on 20 September and moved to Arnhem on 21 September. These soldiers reached the city too late to reinforce the airborne forces, who were forced to retreat. Partly due to the failure of Operation Market Garden, it took until May 1945 before the whole of the Netherlands was liberated.

PostNL only issues these limited-edition golden stamps to celebrate special anniversaries and other remarkable memorable occasions. Previous golden stamps were published for 350 years of Rembrandt, 40 years of Erwin Olaf (portraits of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima) and the End of the Second World War series. Each stamp is made from 24-carat gold.

The City’s First Electric Cinema Theatre Now Serves As Its Philatelic Bureau But Little Is Being Done To Restore The Structure

image

Heritage buildings aren't just pretty structures they're testimony to the traditions of a time past and to outstanding workmanship.Without a legal framework to protect them, were in danger of losing these stories of our roots

Its close to 100 years since the quaint red and white building, now housing the Philatelic Bureau on Anna Salai, was bought by the Postal and Telegraph Department after Warwick Major closed the city's first electric theatre that operated there.Either way, nothing on campus marks the milestone.

A plaque says the building was constructed in 1900 by Warwick Major as an electric theatre and that it was the first ever cinema house in south India. This building was bought by the P&T Department. For many years it housed the Mount Road Post Office, it reads.

There is little to peddle its cause from the outside: Experts describe it as a typical colonial office building, whose character has been changed extensively for practical purposes. Its old,but not too old. And,the buildings historical significance is greater than its architectural importance, said S Suresh of INTACH.In its heydays, the bureau one of the oldest in the country was among the biggest.Chennai has a long and vibrant philatelic tradition, said Suresh. With interest in philately waning, the bureau has lost much of its significance.

The nomination is backed up by the prestigious US newspaper, the New York Times, which considered Burgos to be the Best Tourist Destination in Spain in 2013 and 25th in the world.

The culinary venture came into being in 2011, when the Spanish Catering Federation and the Spanish Tourism Journalists and Writers Federation decided to promote gastronomy as a tourist attraction in Spain and abroad. All from Netherlands..

image

Here are ten new stamps from Netherlands featuring 10 icons of Netherland. It’s a wonderful issue…as these stamps truly depict the specific items  associated Dutch  life and culture . Such iconic stamps have also been issued  by Italy, USA, France and some other countries. The iconic stamps are  always very attractive and  collectors find them a good collectible item !!

image

Central to the new permanent stamps as introduced by PostNL, are ten Dutch objects associated with the Netherlands throughout the world. Icons such as the windmill, bicycle and tulip are among the images portrayed on the stamps. The print run of this stamp is in the millions.

image

Ten objects associated with the Netherlands are portrayed on the stamps. The ten images are a Frisian flat-bottomed boat, a smockmill (windmill), a piece of Gouda cheese, a farmer’s clog, a step-gable from Amsterdam, a delftware kissing pair, a bicycle, a tulip, a cow (Holstein-Frisian) and a Frisian ice-skate. Five of the icons – the bicycle, the windmill, the step-gable, the cow and the tulip – recur on the Dutch Icons International stamp sheetlet.

image

image

3D

The stamps were developed by graphic designer Joachim Baan and concept developer Fleur Derogee. They portrayed the icons as though made with a 3D printer. “We depicted the images as iconically as possible, concentrating purely on form and leaving out all colour and frills. The use of blue-coloured areas created a kind of display case to embed the objects in which the icons are displayed, like in a museum. Yet we also wanted to show each icon in its own environment. That’s why there is an extra graphic layer, with ice crystals around the ice-skate, water with the sailing ship and the form of stretchers at the cheese market,” said Joachim Baan.

Sinterklaas–traditional winter festival

image

PostNL issued a sheetlet of stamps celebrating Sinterklaas and sinterklaasfest. The stamps radiate the atmosphere of joy and expectation corresponding to the spirit of the Saint Nicholas feast in the Netherlands. The five illustrations in ten stamps are based on the classic Santa Claus story.

Sinterklaas is a traditional winter holiday figure still celebrated in the Low Countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, as well as some parts of Germany, French Flanders, Lorraine and Artois. Although he is usually referred to as Sinterklaas, he is also known as De Goedheiligman (The Good Holy Man), SintNicolaas (Saint Nicholas) or simply as De Sint (The Saint).

He is celebrated annually on Saint Nicholas’ eve (5 December) in the Netherlands. Originally, the feast celebrates the name day of Saint Nicholas – patron saint of children, sailors, philatelists, and the city of Amsterdam, among others. Saint Nicholas being a bishop and this geographical spread make clear that the feast in this form has a Roman Catholic background, although the papacy has never officially recognized his existence.

The world's first pop-up stamps from Netherlands

image

On 8 October 2012, PostNL issued the world's first pop-up stamps. The stamp sheet with the three-dimensional stamps on the occasion of the Children's Book Week is a world first. The special paper architecture changes the 2D character of these two stamps into 3D after pulling out the cardboard slider.

image

The stamps themselves as well as the front and back of the sheetlet show illustrations of plants, animals and elements that feature in the Children's Book Week Picture Book Hallo! These illustrations were made by Fleur van der Weel. On the part of the stamp that folds out, a bird and a butterfly are pictured taking flight, as it were. The trunk of an elephant and the neck of a giraffe are displayed in the horizontal area underneath.

This stamp is even more special because it can be placed upright. It is a pop-up stamp with a front and a back plus a secret inside. Thus, it was important that the design be simple for this fold-out 3D stamp. Designers Hans and Sabine Bockting laid the basis for a well thought-out concept. Fleur van der Weel was delighted to be able to receive the first copy of the stamps from the hands of Arno Bijnen of PostNL during the Children's Book Ball on 2 October.

Availability
The stamps are available  at € 5.00 per sheet at the Bruna shops, the Collect Club in Groningen and online via
www.postnl.nl/collectclub. The period of validity is indefinite. The designation on these stamps is Nederland 5, which means that they are for letterbox packets weighing up to 500 grams destined for addresses within the Netherlands. In addition to the stamp sheet featuring two different stamps, a stamp booklet and a first day cover* will also be issued.
