Wafer ice cream is a type of ice cream popular in Singapore, often known as potong (cut) ice cream, which consists of two wafers holding together a block of ice cream. Common flavours offered include ripple, red bean, yam, sweet corn, durian, honeydew, peppermint, chocolate, and chocolate chip. Wafer ice cream vendors also sell the same blocks of ice cream on slices of multicolored bread, on cones or in cups instead of sandwiched between wafers.

The ice cream block is essentially a huge log of ice cream, which is then cut (hence the name potong) and sandwiched between two wafers. It is interesting to note the differences between countries: Singaporean street vendors do not offer individually wrapped ice cream sandwiches like Australia does.

Mango sticky rice or kao niow mamuang is a Thai dessert made with glutinous rice and fresh mango. It is a traditional Thai food eaten with the hands. It is prepared with glutinous rice, commonly called sticky rice. It is eaten by rolling the rice with the fingers and scooping up mango slices. Contrary with other desserts, Mango Sticky Rice is served warm or at room temperature.Mango Sticky Rice is a popular dish in the Indochina region of Southeast Asia, such as Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

The Beehive is where many ministers have their offices, including the Prime Minister of New Zealand. Designed by British architect, Sir Basil Spence, the idea behind the building is that the rooms and offices should radiate from a central core. The building was opened in 1977, with full occupancy occurring around 1979 once the upper floors were opened. The stamp is also available on a first day cover that features the changing face of parliament buildings in Wellington in the past 150 years.

WORLD AIDS DAY

imageimage image

World AIDS Day, observed on 1 December every year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. Government and health officials observe the day, often with speeches or forums on the AIDS topics. Since 1995, the President of the United States has made an official proclamation on World AIDS Day. Governments of other nations have followed suit and issued similar announcements.

image

AIDS has killed more than 25 million people between 1981 and 2007, and an estimated 33.2 million people worldwide live with HIV as of 2007, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history. Despite recent, improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claimed an estimated 2 million lives in 2007, of which about 270,000 were children.

Fashion of Singapore and France on Joint Stamp Issue

The Asia Fashion Exchange, which has been held for four years now, brings together professional from the world for roundtable discussions. It organizes competitions to showcase new generations of Asian designers. It was also in Singapore, where, for the second time at the end of 2012, a week was dedicated to haute couture. For this event, certain young designers from Parisian fashion shows were invited to present their collections with the support of the Federation francaise de la Couture. This crafted a significant milestone for Asia and the occasion for international exchanges and inspiration for the creations of tomorrow.

Double Cancellation Cover

Contradicting facts

The above special cover issued during Ahimsapex – 2010, an exhibition on Gandhi exhibits. It must have a stamp and cancellation on Gandhi.

2. The cover featuring both Gandhi and Tagore in the illustration, must have a Tagore /Gandhi stamp

3.The cancellation shows 150th birth anniversary of Tagore. But the cover was issued on 3 Oct 2010 .The 150th birth anniversary is being celebrated in 2011.

4. The exhibition was on Mahatma Gandhi ( Ahimsapex 2010 ) so cancellation should have connection with Gandhi. The cover illustration, stamp and cancellation do not match with each other which should have common connection. No use of taking another cancellation of First issue of Tagore stamp on the same cover. This cover could give you negative points in the exhibition. Read expert comments by Dr. Avinsah B. Jagtap .

Two special cancellations on the same cover ……..

The first cancellation showing Tagore was impressed on a stamp which has nothing to do with Tagore. The cancellation must have some direct relation with the illustration on the stamp. In fact the whole cover has three different themes and they are not at all inter-related. First the choice of the illustrated blank Cover as it is available before affixing a stamp shows Mahatma Gandhiji and Rabindranath Tagore. This indicates that the stamp which will be affixed must have to do with Mahatmaji AND Rabindranath Tagore, but in fact the stamp shows another personality......"Virchand Raghav Ji Gandhi" . (different from Mahatmaji) and the first special cancellation shows Rabindranath. So this is a very much absurd situation and this Cover has no philatelic bearing. In fact it is a trash, "kitsch"! By adding another stamp on Rabindranath Tagore and putting one more special cancellation, the whole thing has become very ridiculous. This can not be considered something of any value and shows only the poor philatelic knowledge of the collector.

Our member Mr Rajprit Singh Saluja from Kanpur recently visited Singapre Philatelic Museum. Here he shares his experience and some pics of this grand Museum with the readers..

Mr Rajpri Singh Saluja writes from Kanpur….

We went to the philatelic bureau and museum , we were greeted there by the staff with a warm smile .They made us comfortable and guided us to the museum . The bureau had a good collection of not only the new stamp issues , but also was well stocked with old stamps , covers , post cards , books & periodicals , albums , philatelic souvenirs , unsorted stamps bargain lots  etc.  I bought some philatelic material and also got a snap clicked by the bureau staff,  which was used for a personal stamp .

Singapore PHILA Bearuea Brochure

We had a wonderful and enriching experience there . My personal observations about the Philatelic Museum of Singapore  are :

  • Philatelic Tourism is an important avenue for Singapore Tourist Department .
  • The Singapore Postal Department  makes a lot of effort to market their philatelic items to philatelists [Tourists or otherwise] .
  • Personal stamps are a good way of luring stamp lovers and generating revenue for the Department .
  • The bureau staff is well trained and extremely courteous.
  • The Bureau was well stocked with philatelic items .
  • Having a Philatelic museum  , alongwith a philatelic bureau , not only augments the revenue needs of the Bureau , but also makes it a tourist attraction .
