Here are new stamps featuring Covid-19 theme. The stamps show the    fight against biggest  pandemic  of the century  COVID-19 . These stamps salute the frontline warriors of this pandemic.

Moroccan Post issued a special stamp on COVID-19 theme, The revenue from the sale of these stamps will be donated to the Special fund for the COVID – 19.

The stamp issued by China Post shows the front line warriors who worked during the lock down which include Doctors, Police, community workers, scientists and Volunteers.

New Christmas Stamps..

As always Christmas Island Issued  magnificent stamps for this year’s Christmas. The Christmas Island Christmas stamp issue takes a colourful approach to the festive season through illustrations of Santa and Christmas Island fauna. The island was named by Captain William Mynors, who sailed past it on 25 December 1643.

Santa has taken to the air, but not in his traditional mode of transport. Here, he rides on the back of a Frigatebird, with a banner streaming out behind him, announcing tidings of the festive season.

In the other design, a Frigatebird and a Red Crab ferry a payload of presents in a hot-air balloon, while Christmas Island can be seen far below in the blue waters of the Indian Ocean. The skies in the minisheet are alive with a menagerie of local inhabitants: Green Turtles, Golden Bosunbirds, Frigatebirds, Abbott’s Boobys, Red Crabs and a Blue Crab.

The Oryx in the UAE

Oryx is a genus consisting of four large antelope species. Three of them are native to arid parts of Africa, and the fourth to the Arabian Peninsula. Their fur is pale with contrasting dark markings in the face and on the legs, and their long horns are almost straight. The exception is the scimitar oryx, which lacks dark markings on the legs, only has faint dark markings on the head, has an ochre neck, and horns that are clearly decurved.

The Arabian oryx was only saved from extinction through a captive breeding program and reintroduction to the wild. The scimitar oryx, which is now listed as Extinct in the Wild, also relies on a captive breeding program for its survival. Small populations of several oryx species, such as the Scimitar Oryx, exist in Texas and New Mexico (USA) in wild game ranches. Gemsboks were released at the White Sands Missile Range and have become an invasive species of concern at the adjacent White Sands National Monument.

A Special cover was released in honour of Machali (T-16), the royal tigress and pride of Ranthambore National Park - 18th September 2013.

Machali (T-16), the royal tigress is the most famed in India and is exclusively the pride of Ranthambore National Park. It is the most photographed tigress in Ranthambore and is also being known as the "lady of the lake" since it can mostly be found along the water territory of the jungle. The most noticeable thing in Machali is in her name. It is named so since she has the fish shaped marking on the left part of her face. Her legendary fight with 14 foot long crocodile has really created a history and it was the first time since such an encounter has been recorded and filmed.

This renowned tigress was first witnessed during monsoons in 1997, probably in July and this was the time when people impressed with her majestic look and flexible movements. She gave birth to three cubs, one female and the other two male by mating with a large male tiger called "Bamboo Ram". The female one was being named "Sundari (T-17)" and the cubs were named "broken tail" and "slant ear".

Machali, the queen of the tiger dynasty is now in her devolving stage; a painful fact to be accepted. Machali is about 17 years old today old and has defied big cats' general life span of around 10-15 years in the wild. But still her royalty resounds at every nook and corner of Ranthambore. Machli or T-16, is not only the most famous tigress of the park. It has also delivered and protected as many as 11 cubs. The tigress was given the 'Lifetime Achievement Award' by the Travel Operators For Tigers (TOFT).

Death Cap Mushroom

Estonia Post issued a stamp on a variety of mushroom, Amanita phalloides which is highly poisonous and the stamp shows a skull denoting a highly dangerous variety.

Amanita phalloides, commonly known as the death cap, is a deathly mushroom with a long period of latency as its poisons cause major damage to the liver and the kidneys. The death cap is so poisonous that it should not put even into the same basket with mushrooms intended for the kitchen, which can then become equally poisonous. In Estonia the death cap grows in broadleaved forests in August and September. Its cap is greyish, yellowish, and brownish green, olive brown in the centre. When old the cap is up to 15 cm across and slimy fibrous yellowish brown with no fluffs. The cap is slightly sticky in wet weather but dry and shiny on dry days. The gills do not reach the stem, but come close to it. The stem is white from 5 tp 15 cm long and 1 to 2 cm in diameter. The base of the stem is bulbous, up to 4 cm in diameter and is contained within a cup-like structure called the volva.

Her Majesty the Queen – Six Decades of Royal Portraits stamps from Royal Mail

 

Portrait Cards & Framed Royal Portrait Stamps

To mark the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation, Royal Mail has created an extraordinary collection featuring some of the finest portraits of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The portraits are the following (in chronological order):

1953 Terence Cuneo – 2nd Class; it was the Queen’s representatives, the Lord- Lieutenants of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, who commissioned Cuneo to paint the Coronation. The artist attended all eight rehearsals for the event then began painting in the early morning of the Coronation, sketching for eight hours straight. The painting featured on the stamp is a preparatory oil sketch depicting the Queen alone, executed with great liveliness of brushwork and intensity of colour, seen especially in the abstract haze of light surrounding the figure.

1955 Pietro Annigoni – 88p; this celebrated portrait was commissioned in 1954 by the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers for their magnificent hall overlooking the Thames.

Pietro commented how in awe of the Queen he was, until she began chatting to him in French. She told him that as a child she liked to watch the world go by from the windows of Buckingham Palace. It was at this moment Pietro realised what his portrait should convey: “the Queen who, while dear to the hearts of millions whom she loved, was herself alone and far off.”

1992 Richard Stone – £1.88; in 1989, Richard Stone’s home town of Colchester celebrated its 800th anniversary of its Royal Charter; a portrait was commissioned to mark this occasion then later unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery. The artist’s style is intended to match the grandeur and dignity of the golden age of British portraiture. The profile view adds an element of gravity and introspection. After seeing the finished work, the Queen remarked somewhat prophetically, “it will make a good stamp”.

1999 Andrew Festing – 78p; commissioned by the Royal Hospital Chelsea, this portrait is displayed in the entrance hall of its museum. The Queen is shown at Chelsea Hospital, on the steps leading to the Council Chamber. She wears the regalia for the State Opening of Parliament – the Parliamentary Robe of State and the Diamond Diadem. Her traditional costume conveys the continuity in British life of which the monarchy is the most powerful expression.

2000 Sergei Pavlenko – £1.28; commissioned by the Worshipful Company of Drapers to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Queen becoming a Freeman of the Company, this painting hangs in the Court Dining Room at Drapers’ Hall. Unveiled in November 2000, the portrait shows the Queen in Garter robes with one unusual addition – the Drapers’ brooch, presented to Her Majesty in 1947. Pavlenko’s image conveys the Queen as the nation’s most exalted and famous hostess, welcoming hundreds of people every year to Buckingham Palace.

2013 – 1st Class; this portrait was commissioned by Royal Mail especially for this collection and shows the Queen in Garter robes. The artist demonstrates mastery of paint, with the Queen’s head carefully described yet with remarkable animation in the brushstroke and expression. The finished piece shows the Queen wearing the regalia of one of her offices with an easy and cheerful assurance. The portrait expresses Her Majesty’s joy and quiet

Yahsat - UAE's Communication Satellite

Emirates Post issued a commemorative stamp on communication sattelite “ Yahsat” in May 2013 .

Yahsat is a satellite communications company wholly owned subsidiary of Mubadala Development Company, the Abu Dhabi Government's strategic investment company. The company offers voice, data, video and internet services for broadcast, Internet and VSAT users for both private and government organisations.

Incorporated in January 2008 the company had an aim of developing, operating and using multi-purpose (Government and commercial) communications satellite systems for the Middle East, Africa, Europe and South-West Asia regions. Yahsat products includes Satellite Broadband Internet, Satellite Broadcast, Secure Satellite connectivity.

World's Biggest Postage Stamp with "Mother of the Nation" logo

 

Emirates Post released this commemorative hexagonal stamp on 21st March 2013. The stamp features “ The Mother of the  Nation” logo .

International Mother's Day 2013

Women's organisation around the world celebrate International Mother's Day every year on March 21st, as decreed by UN General Assembly. On this occasion in the UAE, Her Highness Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak is being honoured for her achievements in various fields at the local and regional level, as a gesture of appreciation from UAE mothers.

 

As part of the celebrations,the world's biggest postage stamp bearing the "Mother of the Nation" logo is being submitted to the Guiness Book of World records for endorsement.

Fire Insurance Receipt with 8 As. Insurance stamp & a revenue of 8 annas of Shri. Pratapsihrao Gaekwad ( green in color ). Why this Gaekwad revenue stamp was used ? If anybody knows why Geakwad Revenue was used ?. because receipt had been issued from Bombay for Baroda Custom in 1948. Comments are invited from the Readers.

UAE - Champion of the 21st Gulf Cup 2013

The Gulf Cup Championship generates great excitement among football lovers and fabs in the Arab world. This tournament attracts teams from the GCC, Yemen and Iraq.

Held once in two years, its inaugural tournament was held in 1970 were Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Qatar took part.

This year the 21st Gulf Cup was held in Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain. United Arab Emirates won the tournament for the second time, defeating Iraq 2-1 in the finals.To commemorate the victory, Emirates Post issued a set of commemorative stamps on 10th Feb 2013 (AED 2) and souvenir sheet (AED 6)

 

 

50 Years of Postal Services in Abu Dhabi (1963 - 2013)

 

On March 30, 1963 the first post office was opened in Abu Dhabi and was operated under the supervision of British Mail from Bahrain. At the opening ,Queen Elizabeth II stamps were in circulation until the Abu Dhabi stamp was issued in 1965.

In 1967, the Govt. of Abu Dhabi took control from the British postal administration and in 1972, after the Union of UAE the postal services were unified.

To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Postal services in Abu Dhabi, Emirates Post issued a set of four denominations and a distinctive souvenir sheet on 30th Mar 2013

100 years of Al Ahmadiya School, Dubai

 

This was to celebrate 100 years of  Al Ahmadiya School. This school was the first semi-regular school in the Emirate of Dubai, which played a major role in the history of education in the coastal emirates and Dubai. Built in 1912, Al Ahmadiya School, located in Al Ras area of Deira, reflects the history of education in the UAE in general and Dubai in particular.

The stamps, issued in denominations of Dh1 and Dh1.25, and the souvenir sheet of Dh6, feature the facade of the school and a classroom. The school, which had about 300 students in its early years, first had teachers from Saudi Arabia to teach religion and Arabic language and later in 1920, recruited an elite group of teachers from Iraq.

FIP Revenue Commission Guidelines states that "Philatelic importance can be a highly subjective question, but generally speaking points are awarded according to how mainstream your subject is within the world of philately. You will score more for major countries (such as GB, British Colonies, Western Europe, USA, China, Japan) than for minor (such as Eastern Europe, Latin America, Middle East, French Colonies), and more for 19th century material than early 20th, with the modern period (say post-1960) scoring lowest. Also, judges are likely to ascribe greater importance to revenue stamps which are clearly official, well-financed productions (with crafted designs, good-quality printing and perforation etc) than to those which look like bus tickets."  Is this guideline justified ?
