New Round Kiwi stamps from New Zealand

Date of Issue : 4 July 2018

New Zealand Post's popular Round Kiwi stamp has been refreshed for the eighth time, celebrating 30 years since it was first launched in 1988. This issue features all five species of kiwi in their habitat - the brown kiwi, great spotted kiwi, little spotted kiwi, tokoeka and rowi – and in a range of vibrant colours.

Kiwi are flightless, nocturnal birds endemic to Aotearoa. They emerge from their burrows after dark to forage noisily along the forest floor and sniff out worms and insects. Their nostrils are at the base of their bill and give the kiwi a superior sense of smell that makes up for its poor eyesight. Kiwi have been described as ‘honorary mammals’ because of their hair-like feathers, long tactile whiskers at the base of their bill, and their marrow-filled bones. Kiwi are also sometimes called ‘te manu huna a Tāne’ - the hidden bird of Tāne, the god of the forest.

  • Fossil Mammals in Slovenia - Mastodon

Date of Issue : 23 March 2018

Two million years ago the landscape of Slovenia was very different from the way we see it today. The soaring Alps in the west and the forested landscape with patches of marsh and endless plains in the east were an ideal environment for large proboscideans and other mammals. One of the last European mastodons – of the Anancus arvernensis species – would periodically graze in forest clearings here. Anancus arvernensis inhabited a large part of Europe, appearing in the late Miocene and surviving until the start of the Pleistocene. Some other species inhabited parts of Asia and Africa. The Anancus was very similar to today's elephants, although with much longer, straight tusks and different-shaped teeth.

Fossil remains have been found in Slovenia in the Šalek Valley, near Slovenska Bistrica and in many parts of the Slovenske Gorice, Čentibske Gorice and Goričko hill regions. Teeth are the most frequently discovered remains. The best-known site for such finds was discovered near the village of Škala, not far from Velenje, where parts of a skeleton and tusks were also unearthed. The new postage stamp depicts a mastodon tooth discovered more than 70 years ago in a gravel pit close to Sveti Andraž in the Slovenske Gorice hill region. This large tooth (a molar) is from the lower jaw, as also indicated by its strong root.

The age of the tooth is not entirely clear, but it is likely to have belonged to an animal that grazed this hill area, covered with sparse woodland, in the late Pliocene. Changes in the environment in the early Pleistocene, approximately two million years ago, also contributed to the extinction of the last mastodon to roam across the territory of present-day Slovenia. Today the mastodon's tooth is on display at the Natural History Museum of Slovenia. The stamp also incorporates a form of augmented reality: use the HP Reveal app to scan the stamp on a mobile device and launch an X-ray video of the cross section of the mastodon's tooth. On March 22, 2017 the Ministry of Communications and Informatization of the Republic of Belarus will issue the stamp “Crested lark” of the series “Bird of the year”. The crested lark is one of the four species of larks that are found in Belarus. Apart from it skylarks and woodlarks nest in Belarus, and the horned lark also arrives here in winter from the north.Crested larks nest in separate pairs.

Their nests are located on the ground among rare vegetation in a small depression in the soil, on a level surface or on the slope of a ditch or a pit.The crested lark is a sedentary species: it doesn't fly to the south in winter. A strong beak allows it to grind seeds and insects that have frozen into the soil and into the ice. During severe frosts it stays in the snow.Over the past 30 years the number of crested larks in Europe has decreased by 95%. The species became rare in Belarus and it is included in the national Red Data Book.

Zoological Survey of India

image

Date of Issue : 3 December 2015

The Zoological Survey of India is celebrating its 100 years this year. On this occasion Minister of C&IT, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad released Commemorative stamps and Miniature Sheet on Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) at the function held at Conference Hall, National Media Centre, Raisina Road, New Delhi on 3rd December 2015. Set of two stamps is in denomination of Rs. 5 and Rs. 25. The Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change (Independent Charge), Shri Prakash Javadekar, Mrs Kavery Banerjee, Secretary, Department of Posts and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.

imageimage

The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) was established on 1st July, 1916 to promote survey, exploration and research leading to the advancement in our knowledge of various aspects of exceptionally rich life of the erstwhile ´British Indian Empire´. The survey has its genesis in the establishment of the Zoological Section of the Indian Museum at Calcutta in 1875. By gradually strengthening its staff and expanding its research programme, the Survey has met the challenge of the past and is on its way to meet the demands of the future. It has maintained its primary objectives unchanged from its inception.

image

Initially, the Survey acquired the Zoological collections of more than a century old from former Museum (1814 -1875) of the Asiatic Society of Bengal and Zoological Section of the Indian Museum (1875-1916) in Calcutta. With the increasing interest in the life sciences and with the advent of country´s Five Year Plans, the expansion programme of the survey was initiated. The Survey has established so far 16 Regional and Field Stations, and has developed into a major National Institution. It functions as the guardian of the National Zoological Collections, containing over a million identified specimens from all animal groups ranging from Protozoa to Mammals. Extensive and intensive field explorations are undertaken by the Survey in different parts of the country for the studies of fauna, systematic zoology, animal ecology, wildlife and zoogeography, animal behavior, animal population and also marine fauna and the results of the explorations and research are published in its own journals as well as National and International periodicals of repute regularly.

Majestic emperor penguin on new US stamp

image

Date of Issue – 1 June 2015

US Postal Service has released a  stamp dedicated to animals. This particular issue pays tribute to the majestic emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri). The item was unveiled and put into circulation on the 1st of June.

image

Largest of the penguin species, the emperor stands over three feet tall and can weigh more than 80 pounds. Emperor penguins rely on a layer of fat and a waterproof coat of short, stiff feathers to protect them from the subzero temperatures, powerful winds, and icy waters in their Antarctic habitat. Emperor penguins can dive deeper than 1,500 feet in pursuit of fish, squid, and crustaceans ‒ farther than any other bird. They can stay submerged for nearly 20 minutes, though they usually resurface much sooner.

Penguins Digital Color Postmark

image

The stamp art is a stylized drawing of a pair of emperor penguins on a cool green background. The pop of orange and yellow on the birds’ beaks and ear patches lends a regal look to the aptly named emperors.

Penguins is being issued in self-adhesive sheets of 20 and coils of 100 stamps. The words “ADDITIONAL OUNCE” on this stamp indicate its usage value. Like a Forever® stamp, it will always be equal in value to the applicable price for the price category printed on them at the time of use.
