Attar Of Roses
05:24
|
|||
|
The angels wept for a thousand days
For cities of blood had passed by their wings
Attar of roses paved the waving fields
A city was formed when they fell from the hills
Corrupted soil was human born
And tears were the debt that they owed the shore
A pained expression fell on many days
I saw it in their faces and in their gaze
If grief was the price they’d paid to love
Why would they love
If grief was the price they’d pay to love
Why would they love
And how the people changed
And how the seasons changed
They ruled with heartlessness from that day
Said ‘he’s given us these feelings without his grace’
Funerals high and shrouded births
And not a single sea could slate their thirst
You have told so many lies
Let them sear in fear of light
You said to live there will be blood
So they drained all the organs that could harbour love
If this was the price they’d pay to love
Why would they love
If this was the price they’d pay to love
Why do they love
And how the people change
How the seasons change
He swore he’d keep them safe
But how the people changed

I Will Be My End
04:16

I’ve seen medusa
I’ve seen storms
I lived to see them wither and crawl
I’ve seen myself thaw
I gave them my time
Weathered their thorns
I’ve seen butchers be kings
I’ve seen terrible things
All the creatures have fallen
To teach us these things
Will we see
This will be our end
I’ve the privilege of saying
I’ve lived in your life
I’ve been in your paintings
And brushed with your side
Each night
Each night we died
And if there’s a darkness
If there’s an end
Rid me of my spirit
And all I meant
I will be my end
I will be my end
I’ve a sacred disease
It’s a merciless beast
I’d tell you if I were leaving
If they’d grace me to know
I’d say never live alone
We hear the trees scream
On the bush fire’s wind
The moaning of timber
The swells in the stream
Will we see
This will be our end
There’s forces at play
That will darken our days
They whisper in hallways
An inch from the grave
Out of sight
Out of mind
We’ll soon see them choke
On the footsteps of smoke
In the wake of the meeting of
Well meaning ghosts
Having spoke
Having chose
To mark all the walls
To message the streets
This life is for living
Don’t you know?
I will never atone
And If there’s a darkness
If there’s an end
Rid me of my spirit
And all I said
I will be my end
I will be my end

Fields Of Juniper
04:44
|

The grass underfoot was damp from the rain
Through fields of junipers’ blue speckling
Rings of charlotte grew out from the rails
It was here we learnt the wind from the gales
When we rose up to head for our homes
I’d feel as defeated as these beaten roads
I wished you godspeed and watched you fall
Into a darkness you've fallen before
You’ve fallen before
And there stood a cross in the centre of town
It’s shadow lay heavy across the stone walls
You took my hand and said you’d climb
So I’d see you as a martyr that lived in our time
To think for a moment
I’d ever let you go
If you said those words
I’d break down and bawl
I’d curse all the gods
And follow them below
And follow them below
And here’s where we stood to hide from the rain
The sky had settled into a stark grey
We’d been discussing the things that we’d do
I use this memory to escape from my gloom
See, sometimes I stare at the distant herds
This feeling has dogged me since my birth
I witness each day as an hourglass thin
A burning ember that flickers within
Now I’ve got our love
it’s a beautiful shapeless thing
If it grew thin
I’d break down and bawl
I’d slay all the gods
And follow them below
And follow them below
Through winter hail
And through summer sun
I always thought these fields were ours
These fields were ours

Until The Light Takes Us

Today I got a home to a letter from an old friend
Said he was working on finding his smile
He’d lent it with his heart and left only fear for himself
He spoke of how much he missed being a child
It made me think of a neighbour I known long ago
He spent his days tending pet sheep
Till one summer came and he went away
He died of throat cancer on his birthday
He came to me in a dream and said
‘Jacob, Jacob. I never smoked a day in my life’
‘You see some people come, some go’ he said
‘Some people say they will lay with their god
But me I pictured a peaceful black, you see
Where I would lay and think of all that i’d had’
I don't know where I’m going but I know that I’ll meet meet him there
This I know to be true
I don’t know when I’ll leave but I will leave one day
This I know to be true
This is know to be true
Midsummer has come to our walled in park
We spend our day amongst all the stone
By the warmth of your hand, there lies a statue in decay
A shadow fell heavy across my soul
I thought of all those who lay in the somme mud
I pictured all those who perished in France
You asked if I’d play you this song
When you’re old and tired
And asked if our love would die when are grey
When we are grey
I don't know where I’m going but I know that I’ll meet meet you there
This I know to be true
I don’t know when I’ll leave but I will leave one day
This I know to be true
This is know to be true
Tonight I sat down to write a reply
I said my friend don't ever be ashamed
Our dreams may fade, be glad that you had them yesterday
You are here now as I am here now
You see I am me and you can be you
That's all I think we can do
That's all I think we can do

Making Maps

My cousin died in the morning
He didn’t even feel the sun
I can’t sit here bawling
Saying I wish I’d never been born
Getting through to you,
Has been getting shot of me
So let your hair hang low
Tell me how I’m living slow
The devil would sooner live in me
Than settle for a life in you
In You
I’ve been a king of the wickedest dreams
I’ve been aching and sore
I’ve been making a map of your longing to hold on
I’ve been lost for so long
Is there a knife in your locket
Or is meant to thrill
Where people go out walking
You aimed to shoot and kill
So should I paint a shaky sea
Or drown in basic metaphor
Liken you to a port
Where I harbour the darkest thoughts
When you throw me to the rocks
The gulls will feast upon my guts
I'm no hipster shilling snake oil
I’ve no pictures in the sun
But I’ll give you me amongst my dreams
Amongst all the things i’ll leave
I’ll leave
I’ve been a scene in a great tragedy
Half buried in song
I’ve been making a map of your longing to hold on
I can only get it wrong
A strong north western breeze
Carves a sinking hole in me
Under the weight of snow
Barns collapse and hollows fill
In my dreams I’m below
In my dreams I’m below

A Theory Of Resistance
07:15
|
|||
|
Peat smoke covers the village
From our view, a beauty looms
But you don't see it now for you are barely moving
In the window’s way is only you
We wept across the world as we grew tall
Made friends with ourselves, made friends with resolve
But you were given life and didn’t choose to be here
You just flashed awake from the womb
You found something there in the bottom of a bottle
You couldn't bear the light
Or the rolling of dice
I guess we are different now as I have seen
A theory of resistance
To keep living
What are we
When compared to mountains
Breaking the sky
In endless lines
And what are we
Will evil undo us
And what will be
What will we become
The history books will tell you
There’s always been
Ethereal resistance
To our every dream
I’ve wept across a paw lying still
I’ve wept in polished pews
And when babies are born
They say in loss there is untold gain
No matter how distant is seeing them again
These things have taught me it’s always here
A singular existence
So hold it dear
So will you walk in your given shoes
Will you bear the fight and the roaring of tides
For when we breathe
It comes nearer
A break in the sky
An endless night
And what are we
Will evil come to us
What will be will be
And we will become
When we breathe
It comes nearer
A break in the sky
An endless night
When we breathe
It comes nearer
What will be will be
And we will become
We will become

Stood Still
02:38
|
|||
|
All creatures are scared by the pulling of hands
When faced with the burden of time
Run free, run free, or so they were told
Run free and live by your word
It’s easy to see why the kings did not speak
When given luxury and wine
Run free, run free, run free in our court
Beware you may die by our sword
It’s easy to see why the people did weep
Between honour and the divine
The street lights would sag as the poets hang
An innermost song starts to die
Run free, run free
Run freely and tall
But beware you may die by their sword
With the armouries full
The people stood still
They’d harboured the root of decline
Life leeches, unwinds
In the cruelty of time
An innermost love starts to die
Run free, run free
Run freely and tall
But beware you may die for their world
