I think this rating system needs a 5th rating option. The difference between “recommended” and “meh” sounds too large.
For me it’s about tiers. Ignore what they are called. Meh is the third tier. Doesn’t mean meh. Skip is 4th tier. Doesn’t necessarily mean skip. I rank my games based on the level of enjoyment I get from them, and I break them into different tiers. The tiers are my “favourite game” tiers. That’s how I categorize them.

Concise Review:
Amazing and unique combat that’s hampered by a lack of enemy variety, boring quests, and a slew of QOL issues that hurt the overall experience rather than added to it. I’d describe this game as a fun time that doesn’t reach its potential. I think the 88 on open critic is too high.
Journal:
Early first impressions, which for a game like this mean very little as RPGs take a bit of time to get into. But, first impressions are the graphics overall are meh but not bad enough to distract, the story feels meh but I barely know anything so this is way to early to tell, the combat seems like it might be pretty great. The early highlight was a big ogre fight where I was jumping and climbing in the ogres back stabbing it along the way. It was pretty awesome.
The cooking meat graphics are weirdly incredible for an otherwise mostly meh looking game.
I have some complaints which I will get to at some point, but the fights against large enemies are so awesome in this game. Climbing giant enemies is executed very well. It’s super fun and epic.
The combat in general is awesome. I love it. The takeaway that developers should learn from this game’s success is that there are still plenty of new creative combat systems and general game mechanics to be played around with. Not every excellent combat system needs to follow the soulslike formula.
I’ve been liking the warrior vocation a lot. It’s slow but heavy hitting and I love jumping on top of enemies with the heavy downward stab attack. It’s so epic. I am interested in the other vocations as well though. I’m having a similar ish feeling as I had playing Diablo where I want to test out all of the different classes.
I really liked the Warrior but now that I have fully levelled up I’m switching to thief. I do like how the game encourages you to test out multiple vocations. Warrior was pretty awesome though. Might be tough to top.
Going in to this game I expected it to be more like the Witcher 3, or Baldur’s gate 3, or Skyrim. What I’ve found is it’s actually closer to Elden ring. The fun part of the game (so far) has been exploring the map, discovering new enemies, levelling up my vocation, and just in general killing all the enemies in sight because the combat is awesome. What hasn’t been great has been the actual quests and the stuff that happens in the cities.
I think that CEO saying “we don’t have fast travel because it’s fun to explore in our game, other games make traveling boring” is an idiot. He should not have said that, first because then they added micro transactions to buy fast travel packs (what the actual fuck?), that makes you seem like a slimy company, and then two, your game isn’t doing something different than other open world games. I had high expectations for this open world. I expected lots of random encounters or other rewarding things to happen and from what I’ve seen so far there really isn’t anything special or unique that justifies not having fast travel. In fact, I’d explore the map more if there was fast travel. There are sections of the map I havnt seen that I’d like to go check out but I’m not walking halfway across the map fighting the same 4 types of enemies to see what’s in the areas I missed. Especially when my guy is constantly running out of stamina. There really are a number of QOL issues in this game. I respect some of the attempts to be different but I think they clash with what type of game this actually is.
The enemy variety is feeling worse and worse the longer I’ve played. Both for bosses and normal unit. There’s a lot of repetition. I still love the combat but at this point I wish there was more out there.
The thief is definitely better than the warrior but I don’t like him quite as much. He’s almost made the game trivial at this point, although that’s probably partly just because Im a high level now. But the combat has been pretty easy recently. Defeating dragons is still a bit challenging but the rest of the enemies have been quite easy.
So I beat the game not realizing it was going to be the last fight, and then the game saves immediately after, so I can’t go back and my last save at the inn was a long time ago. So my options are start NG+ which has no level scaling and I’d have to redo a bunch of stuff that will be trivial and I don’t want to do. Or I could return to my last save at the inn and redo the last story stretch, again losing many hours. Neither options is great. I kind of wanted to fight a few more bosses before finishing the game and I wanted to go back to warrior for a bit because I liked him more but after finishing the game and having these setbacks I think I’m just done. Which is a rather disappointing ending.
I had an itch that I wanted to play the warrior just a little bit more and I’m am happy I did. The warrior is my favourite class. The thief is too easy and repetitive. The warrior is epic. I bit the bullet, replayed the boring stretch from my last imm save so I could switch back to Warrior and explore the last few areas before calling it quits. There were major areas I hadn’t seen at all. Don’t get me wrong, same enemies, pointless loot, and the environment itself is still pretty much the same biome but there are still some cool areas to check out. I am back on board with playing this game a bit more. This rarely happens.
THE GOOD:
- Climbing on giant enemies is awesome. Other game will (and should) copy some aspects of this game mechanic. Normally in games when you fight large monsters you just hack at their feet but this game nails what it should feel like to actually take down a big beast.
- The combat in general is really solid. It actually feels unique which is rare these days.
- I respect how this game is actually pretty different in a number of ways. There’s no skill tree. That surprised me at first.
- The pawns system is unique and pretty solid. I like the balance of having one pawn who levels up with you and you are responsible for upgrading her gear etc. but then the other two pawns are all short term loans. Plus I like that they are other peoples pawns. Some peoples creations are interesting we will say.
THE BAD:
- I wish there was fast travel. I get what they are going for, and the exploration is fun but there are still times I’d rather fast travel back to town. Elden ring is the greatest exploration game ever and it has fast travel. DD2 should have a more usable fast travel system.
- They don’t include fast travel because they want you to explore the world, and they are correct that the map exploration is the highlight of the game, but what I don’t think they realized is the lack of fast travel limits how much I explore the map. There are some areas that I would go explore more if I could fast travel. I just don’t want to have to walk past the same area for the fifth time to get to the new area. I also expected more random encounters to occur based on the CEO dude saying it’s so fun to travel in his game. It’s just like any other open world game. I don’t get what he thinks is special.
- The stamina drain for sprinting is too fast for a game that wants you to runaround everywhere.
- There are stealth missions when the game has no stealth mechanics. Like I walk right past guards who say hey you can’t go in there but then nothing happens. It’s funny. I think they should have removed those style of quests.
- I don’t really like the missions that happen in cities so far. I really just like the exploration wilderness or enemy camp missions because the combat is really fun. It’s carrying the game.
- Why don’t they just have a normal save system? Let me have back up saves? The one save system discourages creativity because I’m worried I’ll fuck up a save and then have no way to go back.
THE MEH:
- I’ve found the story to be very meh so far, I’m not super deep into it yet but it hasn’t grabbed me at all yet.
- The world aesthetic is alright but not that great. I’m still relatively early but I bet I’ve seen roughly 30-40% of the map so far and again, based on CEO dude bragging about fun it is to explore in his game I thought it’d be better. It’s not bad, but it’s not that good either.
- Graphics and performance I’m saying is meh but it’s borderline bad for a AAA 2024 game that in Canada after tax costs $106 fucking dollars. It unfair to compare game’s graphics but AA Helldivers 2 which was a reduced cost game looks way better.
Final Score: B+

Just played the intro so far. Maybe an hour. This isn’t a critique of the game but I’m noticing more and more my TV is completely burnt in. The picture quality and color is off. Which sucks. This game is a good looking game but I feel I can’t fully appreciate it with my TV. Side rant over.
I got my first win pretty early. First night. I had this really great combo where I had a joker that 1 in 4 upgrades the hand played. Plus this really good joker that adds the number times you’ve used a hand as the multiplier. So I used two pair every single hand I could. Got it super upgraded. And it kept getting better and better due to levels and the number of hands played. It wrecked.
This seems like it will be a fun pure strategy game. I hope it has some decent legs. It seems like it could, as long as there feels like there are enough unique strategies. If I end up chasing similar versions of my original winning strategy every time then I’ll up getting bored.
Got my second win, with the red deck this time. I got a joker early on that gave a +4 mult per diamond and then I spent the rest of the game manipulating my deck it have as many diamonds as possible. I upgraded flush as much as possible and it was really really good. There were a few other factors that really upped the synergy. This is a clever roguelike. I really have no idea how long it’s going to hold my attention but I like the structure to the game.
Damn, I had a pretty good run going with blue deck level 2. Then I failed on the last boss ante. It was the violet one that’s the very large blind. 300,000. I couldn’t get there. Only like 180. Wasn’t even close. My flaw in my run I learned was that I had pretty much only invested in jokers, and planets. I skipped card packs and tarots because one of my jokers got +3mult for skips. It made a great consistent hand that was really good right up until it couldn’t reach that upper limit.
Current Score: B+

It’s great that SpongeBob and Patrick are the voice actors (from what I can tell). It’s a bummer Mr. Krabs isn’t though. I could immediately tell.
Played for an hour or so. It was fun nostalgia for a Saturday morning. I remember liking this game as a kid. I don’t need to play anymore.
Shouldn’t really rank it but I’m giving it a low B.

1 hour in, so very early first impressions. Graphics looks nice. The gunplay feels a bit light. I want more weight, more impact. Sometimes I can’t tell if my bullets are hitting because there isn’t a clear indication. I don’t remember feeling this way about RE2 but I also can imagine them taking steps backwards in terms of gameplay? So I’m not really sure yet. Maybe I just dont like the pistol and that’s all I have so far. Story seems like it’s going to be generic cheesy bullshit. There have already been a couple “really, that’s what these people are doing right now” moments. Also, I like the big baddy chasing me around the RE2 but I’m not sure if it will land the same this time around. It’s kind of funny how this enemy is walking through walls and taking RPGs to the chest… but then you go through some flimsy looking wooden door and he doesn’t follow you.
2.5 hours in. Way too much nemesis in this one. I don’t like it. There was no build up. They just throw him at you repeatedly. This game is going for more action but the combat and gameplay doesn’t have the juice for that.
I’m not digging this game. Just finished the Carlos section which was just in the same area as the first game. It isn’t even new. It was lame. I’m about to call it quits. It’s hard for me to imagine this even getting to a B+ at this point but I might play a little longer.
Guns are so weak in this game that it makes the combat unsatisfying. Why does it take like 12 heads shots with an assault rifle to kill a normal zombie. For this style of game it should be higher damage and about making your shots count.
It’s been doing just enough to keep me going. I’m just interested enough to see what the next level will be. I might still bail though. Idk.
Pretty sure I missed the magnum which is really fucking lame.
Ya I’m done. Played almost 5 hours out of what’s apparently a 7ish hour campaign so I’m close and I still don’t feel the need to finish it. Missing that magnum was the last draw.
Ends a pretty low B. I didn’t connect with this one. I had issues with pretty much every aspect of the game (story, gameplay, design, progression, even the visuals weren’t as good as I expected).

Played for about 20 mins. Wanted to try it out before it left gamepass. Not for me.
Fun start. I like the feel of the melee combat so far and I love the visual style of the combat. The zombies look great. The Hollywood setting I’m liking. The two foot jump kick is very fun. The weapon mod system seems fun. I really don’t have any complaints so far. The story is filled with cheesy B movie dialogue but I think it works for this non serious zombie style.
This is a lot better and more fun than I was expecting. I think the reviews are too low. This is a great zombie game.
One thing I’m really liking about dead island 2 has been the rate at which I am getting new weapons and mods. There has been a good amount of variety and I am enjoying testing them out. The sledgehammer is my favourite weapon so far though. Meat cleaver is also quite good.
Game is still better than I thought it’d be. I am having fun with it. It’s the type of game that maybe never reaches any crazy highs, but it also hasn’t had any low parts. It’s been quite fun the whole time, I like the pacing, I’ve enjoyed exploring the different open zones. The zombies themselves have been awesome and the combat has a really great feel to it. It’s not particularly challenging but it’s fun. It’s a chill game.
Beat it. Fun game. The length felt appropriate. I did lots of side missions at the start and then for the final section I just finished the main campaign and didn’t do the last round of side quests. I had explored all the maps well enough. Fun AA game. Mid upper B+.

Played one game. It wasn’t the worst thing ever but it didn’t seem like it was going to be that fun. I tried to play the objective based rubber duck mode because I figured that would be better but after 8 minutes of searching and failing to find a match I gave up. I wanted to test it out to see if this game had like a weekends worth of fun in it but there are too many good games out there to waste any more time on this one.
Total time played: about 20 minutes

I’m about 5 ish hours in and overall I am liking it. It’s very solid. The art style and theme is great. I love the grim reaper office burnout storyline. That’s funny and clever. I think the character movement and combat is solid. It feels like I have barely scratched the surface with how many scythes, cloak weapons and spells there are. On an individual run I think the build variety and build progression is decent. Not amazing but it’s pretty good. I’m trying some new strategies and the curse modifiers make a big impact. My main complaint so far is I wish there was some more permanent progression. The game makes it seem like the pristium currency is used for permanent upgrades but it isn’t. Thats my main issue currently. How is it worth upgrading the shop for an extra item slot only for it to be gone next run? I’m supposed to spend my most valuable resource for an opportunity to buy another item? Which I still need to pay for? It doesn’t really seem balanced.
11 ish hours in. Finally got my first “successful” run. But it isn’t really a full run. You beat the war major and then death gets a glimpse of a beach vacation (funny, I’ve been playing while on vacation in Hawaii…kind of perfect) before getting kicked back to the start. My build was really good as you would expect. I had a fully upgraded twin scythe, level 2 bees and the peace spell that gives a bit more health and mana. Plus I had lots of critical hit curses. It was a great combo. Game is currently a low B+, it could continue to climb though. Probably won’t make top 10 2D games but likely an honourable mention. It’s fun, it’s really solid across the board, but there is something slightly missing to push it to the next level for me. For now at least.
Beat time and got actual final credits on my very next run using a completely different build, which is a good sign in a rogue light. This time I used this boulder raining spell and combo’d it with lighting and butterfly curses that landed on hits. It worked well. Easy to maintain distance.
I googled and know there is a secret final boss, life. It sounds cool but I think I’m good. It took me 18 runs and 13.5 hrs to beat this game. There are still lots of weapons and spells I havnt unlocked yet. And harder difficulties to try. But I think I’m good. I liked this game. Didn’t really love it though. I don’t need to overdo it. Maybe I’ll come back again sometime, but as usual, I doubt it.

Pretty good game to play for a bit on a plane. Or a travel day in general. But a “plane game” isn’t the highest of compliments.
The challenges have been decent but I can’t help but compare this game to humanity which is sooooo much better. Maybe that’s not fair, but there are some puzzle principles that both games have that remind me of each other.
I’ve played quite a bit of it. I’m on the spring challenge box now. I think it was spring. The one after the hearts box. The challenges are decent and I plan to beat the game but I also don’t see this climbing my fave games list that much. It’s alright but I don’t see why this got such high reviews, except that not a lot of people reviewed it.

It’s alright but I don’t see why this got such high reviews, except that not a lot of people reviewed it.
Current Score: B
Concise Review:
An all time favourite. I loved this game from the get go and then it only got better and better. Easily my favourite Live Service Game ever. Also my favourite PVE Shooter ever. Super fun game and I can’t wait to see where it will be at in a year or two.
Journal:
The vibes are great. The satire is working. I’m really liking it.
Definitely a multiplayer game. I played a few solo rounds and it misses the chaotic fun that happens during coop.
The automatons are awesome. I usually don’t like fighting robots but these terminator clones are frightening and super fun to fight. And that Star Wars walker is fun to run from as well. The starship trooper bugs are probably still my preferred enemy by a bit though. I like both.
I’ve been impressed with the first four planets I’ve fought on. They have each been different and honestly quite cool. The graphics in this game are surprisingly good. Better than I thought they’d be for a $50 AA game.
This game is awesome. It’s so cool. The gameplay is epic. It’s intense. It’s cinematic. It’s comical. I’m loving it.
The jet pack is becoming an early fave. I also love the different sentries.
There are some incredibly intense, cinematic, awesome moments in this game. Sometimes fighting, sometimes fleeing for my life, sometimes making an epic run dodging through crowds of bugs to pick up dropped sample before rushing into the evacuation ship. For democracy!
Well timed. I went to Hawaii when the secret issues were happening and when I got back it was fine and fixed. When I got back I binged hard. This game is fantastic. I had a bunch of awful teammates for a few rounds which resulted in me having an epic heroic run. And then I solo’d for a couple rounds and at this point I actually don’t mind soloing. A good squad of four is definitely the best way to play but this game is impressive in that it’s still fun with everything in between. I’m loving Helldivers. Big surprise hit for me.
Still loving it. My current main loadout is breaker, machine pistol, impact grenade, jet pack, rail gun, eagle air strike and eagle 500kg. I fly around the map dropping bombs and sniping heavies with the rail gun. It’s awesome. I’ve landed on Suicidal - 7 as my favourite difficulty to play on. For now at least.
I wonder how long until they release a new enemy. It’s inevitable, but is that content update a few months away? 6 months away? Or is it a year away? My guess is it’s a major update than at least a year away but it would be pretty cool if it dropped sooner and unexpectedly.
Absolutely loving Helldivers. I’ve been using the slugger now and enjoying it. I think the breaker is better but the slugger is pretty good too. It’s easier to get overwhelmed but if you can keep them at bay it’s pretty awesome. Helldivers is approaching an A rank. It’s a high A- currently.
Fuck it. It’s an A. It’s so good. I’m maybe giving this ranking a hair early but I can’t see it not getting there. I’m having so much fun and I respect the quality of the game and the live service elements of the game. They aren’t being slimey about it. Only good vibes from Helldivers.
First balance patch arrived. Nerfed rail gun and breaker a bit which I’m fine with. Bumped up flamethrower which I had a couple games with and the laser canon which I still need to test out. My new favourite weapon though is actually the single use anti tank rocket. It’s very epic, probably not the best weapon since you need to call down new rockets quite often which can be challenging when the chaos hits, but it’s really cool throwing down the support call in, sprinting away from a charger to pick up the EAT, dive to the side away from a charger attack and shoot this massive rocket blowing the charger to bits. It’s just really fun.
The balance patch upped the spawn rate for enemies it seems. Maybe unintentionally? Not sure, the game is harder though for sure. I had a streak of games with bad teammates (sometimes me included) and we couldn’t extract so I numbed it down to 5 for a bit more breathing room. Still loving the game although I anticipate there will be some fixes incoming. The spawn rates seem to be flawed now.
Love this game. It’s so good. The loadout variety has gotten better with the last two updates. There’s lots to play around with.
The amount of viable loadouts is awesome and it’s only going to keep getting better. I’ve been using the scorcher and pairing it with the machine gun in max RPM. I snipe the enemies from a distance and when things get hot or they get close I switch to the machine gun and make it rain lead. Very fun.
Still climbing. It’s a high A currently.
The flying bugs on the fire tornado planet are sweet. Game keeps getting better. Also I love the scorcher. It’s S tier both bugs and bots.
I’ve finally started using the Autocanon (it was hard to give up Jetpack or shield) and it’s awesome. It’s really good for bots. It might become a go to for bots. Possibly S tier. Needs further testing but being able to kill hulks from distance is huge.
Two new weapon stratagem unlocks. Quasor Laser and a heavy machine gun. First game with the Quasor and it’s awesome.
Shooting down drop ships with the Quasor is awesome.
Slugger got nerfed :( RIP
I love my bots loadout right now. Shield, Quasor, Autocanon Sentry which is actually awesome if you place it well. And 500kg because it’s always useful and it’s still the coolest part of the game. Then you can pair it with a whole number of guns and it’s solid. It works with scorcher, slugger pre nerf, liberator P post buff, and Diligence CS post buff. All those loadouts rock.
It’s an A+. This game is awesome.
Post buff I really like the liberator P and the Diligence CS, at least for the bots. Sniping from a distance is very fun. It pairs so well with the Quasor Laser. There are more and more viable loadouts with every update. I miss the slugger but the overall package is better. Fuck I love this game.
At first I thought the Quasar was just the GOAT support drop but it’s only the GOAT for bots. It’s still great for bugs, it’s an A. But I think for bugs the EAT is better. The Quasar charge time makes it hard to one hit chargers. It’s a well balanced weapon. AH don’t nerf!
I am struggling to rank the Diligence CS for bots. For how good it is, it’s probably a B tier, but for how fun it is it’s an A tier. I solo level 7’d a couple hits rounds, one with the Liberator P which was epic and I even successfully extracted with my samples. For the CS I failed the mission the first time, got completely over run but a lot of it was a skill issue. Then the second round I beat the mission and was so close to extracting but I died 2 seconds too fast. I do really think it’s a fun weapon though.
Just used the AMR for the first time against bots. Which happened to be after it got its damage buff. And oh my. It’s so good. It’s the best weapon in the game for taking out rocket devastators, normal devastators, those heavy shield guys, and the chainsaw dudes. Plus it’s also decent against tanks and turrets if you get behind them. And it’s overkill but fine at killing the light enemies. This plus the range makes it pretty damn great. It also pairs well with the Autocanon sentry which I’ve been liking. This game is great. These days I prefer fighting bots over bugs which I never expected to feel.

Starting Weapons:
- Adjudicator - if you switch the Full Auto and treat it like a high powered assault rifle with a small clip…it’s still pretty bad against both bugs and bots but it is manageable. It needs a buff though. I think increase the clip size by 25% and give us 2 or 3 more clips and then it might be alright.
- Eruptor - Reddit made me believe this gun was going to be A or S but idk I found it alright but the slow rate of fire, slow bullet speed and the handling made it overall just feel so-so for me. I might not have the rhythm yet though.
Secondary Weapons:
- Redeemer - The GOAT sidearm
- Senator - The sidearm I want to bring because it’s cool but can’t because it’s so bad. The reload time is so long it’s really hard to justify bringing it.
Weapon Stratagems:
- EAT - IMO the most democratic weapon. It’s got that feel.
- AMR - Pang Pang Motherfucker
- Quasar - Old Reliable
- Flamethrower - More fun than effective in my experience. Good to bring on bug exterminator missions though.
Grenades:
- Incendiary Grenades - Awesome against bugs for cinematic reasons but also effective against bug breaches and at pinch points. Pairs well with Breaker Incendiary for full fire.
- Impact Grenades - The oh shit I’m about to get swarmed escape plan.
Stratagems:
- Eagle 500kg - The GOAT. There’s no problem the 500kg can’t solve. I bring it nearly every mission.
- Jetpack - Once you try the Jetpack vs bugs it’s really hard to go back to just using your feet.
- Autocanon Sentry - One of my personal favourites for Bots. It takes some practise learning when and where to place it but a well placed ACS turns a battle around.
- Personal Shield - Similar to the Jetpack with the bugs, I rarely go to a bot planet without my trusted Shield.
- Gatling Sentry - After realizing how good the ACS is for bots I messed around more with sentries for bugs and the Gatling Sentry rips apart those little bastards. Again, it takes some strategy when placing the sentry to get the best results but a well placed sentry can get shred in armoured bugs. You gotta watch out for those chargers though.
- Tesla Tower - It can be great on Defense missions depending on where you throw it but it’s challenging to find that perfect spot. It’s gotta be between you and the enemy, but not too close to Helldivers, and you have to still semi guard it against heavy units, or ranged bot attacks. There’s just a lot that needs to line up for it to be an effective drop but when it does kine up its incredible.
Current Score: A+

Played the first 4 or 5 ish levels and it was a pretty fun start. I recently played Ori and the will of the Wisps and I think the Ori games took some inspiration from this game. Ori looks way better still as it’s newer and more refined but Rayman Legends has a really nice art style and the depth of the world reminds me of Ori. Good start. I can see myself enjoying this game. We will see.
That level where it plays the song black Betty and you are jumping and moving to the beat was awesome. I also loved the monster singing there monster version of black Betty. Great vibes.
The movement and platforming is fine but not blowing me away at the moment. I’m enjoying it for a few levels at a time. Not feeling the need to binge at all. It’s not challenging enough yet to really capture me. Again, in theory it will get harder as I am early in still.
I love the music levels. Where you run and it’s times to beat of these popular songs. Very fun. Definitely the best part of the game.
I’m probably halfway ish through the game at this point and I’m calling it. I don’t like the actual gameplay that much. I like the design, art style, and I love the music. But the movement and platforming isn’t that fun. I got a taste and found out it’s alright but not really for me.
Final Score: B
