about

This track is a unique one because it’s essentially an Afrobeat song—or, at least, its backbone is Afrobeat. The song is built on a fretless bass (played by Chris Sclafani) interlocking with a classic Afrobeat cross-stick/hi-hat/kick drum pattern, supported by shakers and rattles in the rhythm section and a balafon, mbira, and kora rounding out the ensemble. This is also the only track on the EP that makes much use of synthesizers—there are several pulsing and arpeggiated synth elements in the song, including a synth bass sidechained to the kick, to make the whole thing feel a bit like a club/dance record.

Lyrically, most of our songs tend to be sort of heartbreaking, but “Your Mouth Is a Garden” breaks the mold at least a little bit. There’s definitely a spirit of yearning and unfulfillment throughout, but there’s also a real theme of hope—”wait for it all to bloom.”

lyrics

Thought about what I said
And I wanna take it back
Hanging on by a thread
When I knew it would snap
Can we break the head from the haft
And bury it somewhere outside?

And if you’re feeling lucky
I know a good excuse
You say “If you wanna touch me,
Then tell me the truth:
If so many miracles happen,
Why do they just pass us by?”

Just wait for it all
Wait for it all to bloom
I’ll stand by the gate
I’m willing to wait for you

I can feel your heart
In the shudder of your skin
And your mouth is a garden
I’m tumbling in
And under the heat of my hands
Your eyes begin to turn snow-white

And you fall on your back
With so little in between
Arms pinned to the mattress
Like butterfly wings
And how can you not understand?
You’re always in a brand-new light

Just wait for it all
Wait for it all to bloom
(Wait for it all to bloom)
I’ll stand by the gate
I’m willing to wait for you

And you’re carrying a weight
That’s hard to hold
You wanna wake up one day
And just unfold
And start to grow
But isn’t that all you do?

Just wait for it all
Wait for it all to bloom
(Wait for it all to bloom)
I’ll stand by the gate
I’m willing to wait for you

I'm willing to wait for you

Always, always
Always, always

Always, always
Always, always

Always
