This mixtape was originally created in 1997, built mostly with tracker-based production using X-Tracker software, with SoundForge for detailed sample editing. The sound was heavily sample-driven, with some basic FM soft synths, but primarily constructed from carefully chopped and manipulated audio.

At the time, I was immersed in a lot of '90s rap: Ice T, Ice Cube, Geto Boys, X Clan, absorbing their rawness and storytelling, which inevitably found its way into the mix. This tape reflects the chaos and intensity of that period, cycling through themes that have remained constant in my work: government corruption, anti-authoritarianism, mental health struggles, and personal battles against systemic injustice.

Influences & Themes

One of the key inspirations was Alien 3, specifically the idea of a prison planet where a cult of prisoners wages war against the alien. The opening track includes a sample from Alien 3, a moment of defiance, of believers against company men. Even back then, the themes of oppression and rebellion were at the forefront, much like they are today.

Musically, this mix is a relentless clash of sounds: amen breaks, dread bass, acid leads, constantly shifting between manic aggression and fleeting moments of euphoria. That mirrored my life at the time: a cycle of extreme highs and lows, horror and bliss, unpredictability, and upheaval. In hindsight, my process of endlessly cutting up sounds and restructuring them made perfect sense. It was a reflection of the way I was living, constantly adapting to sudden changes, without realizing that my experience wasn’t exactly "normal."

The Making of...

This mixtape was made in a tiny, shitty apartment where everything was a struggle. My neighbor came knocking almost daily, furious at the noise, to the point of threatening to stab me in some psychotic fit. But making music was already an uphill battle. Production equipment was absurdly expensive for me, and everything was a process of trial and error. I had no roadmap, just an instinct to push forward, running through walls rather than climbing them.

A fun bit of history: there’s a cameo from Hecate, who visited during that time and recorded some wild vocals, adding an extra layer of madness to the project.

Retrospective

Compared to today, everything back then was an ordeal. Even the most basic aspects of making music were a hassle. But I did have one consistent ritual to decompress: I’d rent movies from the local video store, watch them, and sample the hell out of them. It’s funny to think that this tape was made entirely inside a computer, only for me to later switch to external hardware, before eventually returning to an all-digital workflow.

Looking back, I wonder how much of that era shaped everything that followed...
