In his newly published article Why Trust-Based Philanthropy Still Needs Metrics<\/a> <\/em>for The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Overbrook President Eric Weingartner shares a compelling perspective on the intersection between trust-based philanthropy and performance measurement. Eric insists that these two approaches are not mutually exclusive but can complement each other to drive greater impact; insisting that even small foundations can implement effective measurement processes without creating undue burdens on grantees. Martha Brooks is a widely experienced international operations executive, board member and philanthropist. She currently serves as a director at both Volvo AB and Constellium, and was formerly a director at Jabil, Bombardier, International Paper, and Harley-Davidson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her executive career, Martha served 16 years with Cummins, the global leader in diesel engine and power generation, ultimately running the core truck and bus engine business. She then moved on to aluminum giant Alcan as CEO of the Rolled Products Americas and Asia business. As her business and another division were spun off after a major acquisition, she took on the COO role for the new public company, Novelis, and later led it through a second sale process to Indian giant, Aditya Birla Group, before retiring as the leader of Novelis, the $11-billion global leader in aluminum rolling and recycling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout her career, Martha has lived on three continents and held leadership roles in joint ventures and licensing, marketing and customer engineering, product planning, M&A, corporate strategy and general management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since her early work as a teacher in China with the Yale-China Association, Martha has been deeply interested in economic development. She has chaired the board of CARE, a leading poverty fighting NGO active in over 100 countries, as well as the Yale-China Association, the Carter Center Board of Councilors, and has served on numerous other non-profit and university boards in leadership roles. She is a graduate of Yale University with a bachelor of the arts in economics and political science and a master\u2019s degree in public and private management. Admiral Dennis McGinn is a strategic advisor for the public and private sectors defining the intersection of energy, environment, and national security. He served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment from September 2013 until January 2017, leading the transformation of naval installations toward greater mission resiliency through energy efficiency, renewable energy, microgrids, and information technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admiral McGinn served on active duty in the United States Navy for 35 years as a naval aviator, test pilot, aircraft carrier commanding officer, and national security strategist. He led the development of future Navy capabilities as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Warfare Requirements and commanded the United States Third Fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admiral McGinn is former President of the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) where he led efforts to define and communicate the economic, security, and environmental benefits of renewable energy. As well as his seat on the board of trustees for RMI, he serves on the board of directors of the Electric Power Research Institute and the Willdan Group. He is a strategic advisor to the Edison Electric Institute, Southern Company, and Lee Enterprise Consulting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Jon Creyts is the Chief Executive Officer of RMI. He is an internationally recognized leader on global energy issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since joining the organization in 2012, he has managed the strategy and execution of RMI\u2019s global activities in multiple senior positions, becoming CEO in 2022. Under his leadership, RMI has advanced market-based solutions to transform the global energy system to secure a clean, prosperous, and zero-carbon future for all. An independent, nonpartisan nonprofit, RMI works with businesses, communities, governments, and other NGOs to accelerate and scale solutions that drive the cost-effective shift from fossil fuels to renewable and efficient energy use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among his contributions, Dr. Creyts conceived and built RMI\u2019s breakthrough climate technology accelerator Third Derivative, stewarded RMI\u2019s Business Renewables Center to spin out as the Clean Energy Buyers Association, and helped build and spin out Energy Web.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He currently serves on the board of the Mission Possible Partnership, on the advisory group for the WRI Polsky Center for the Global Energy Transition, as an independent trustee for the Jeremy and Hannelore Grantham Environmental Trust, as a distinguished advisor to the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market, and as a commissioner for the Energy Transitions Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Background<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Prior to joining RMI, he was a partner with McKinsey & Company in the global energy practice. There, he also helped found the sustainability practice and co-authored the US cost-curve on carbon abatement. He was trained as an engineer in the energy and aviation industries and is an alumnus of Lockheed Martin\u2019s renowned Skunk Works prototyping facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jon earned a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley in mechanical engineering for research on industrial circularity. He also earned national recognition as a 2025 Forbes Sustainability Leader and was featured at the TIME100 Climate Leadership Forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paula R. Glover is the president of the Alliance to Save Energy, a bipartisan, nonprofit coalition dedicated to advancing federal energy efficiency policy. Under her leadership, the Alliance has been instrumental in shaping landmark energy  policies, including the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act, and has secured billions of dollars in federal funding for energy efficiency programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paula has long been committed to ensuring that underrepresented communities have a voice in shaping energy policy. Prior to joining the Alliance, she served as president and CEO of the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE), a national nonprofit focused on ensuring minority input in energy policy, regulation, and environmental issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paula serves on the board of Talos Energy, Clean Energy Works, Keystone Policy Center, and Resources for the Future. She serves on advisory boards for National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL ) and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Paula has been a member of the National Petroleum Council since 2014 and in 2023 was appointed as a member of the Department of Energy Electricity Advisory Committee. Additionally, she is a trustee at Cardigan Mountain School in Canaan, NH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bryan Hannegan (he\/him) is President and CEO of Holy Cross Energy, a not-for-profit, member-owned electric cooperative utility providing electricity and energy products and services to more than 46,000 customers in Western Colorado. Headquartered in Glenwood Springs, Holy Cross Energy is leading the responsible transition to a clean energy future with its \"Journey to 100%\" plan aimed at obtaining 100% renewable and clean energy for its members by 2030. For its efforts, Holy Cross Energy was named \u201c2020 Electric Cooperative of the Year\u201d by the Smart Electric Power Alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior to joining Holy Cross in July 2017, Bryan was an Associate Laboratory Director at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), where he co-founded the US Department of Energy's Grid Modernization Initiative and started up the Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF). A unique \"distribution grid in a box,\" ESIF enables utilities, entrepreneurs, and consumers to work together on clean, affordable and reliable energy systems. Earlier in his career, Bryan held senior leadership roles at the Electric Power Research Institute, the White House Council on Environmental Quality, and the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bryan holds a Ph.D. in Earth Systems Science and an M.S. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, both from the University of California at Irvine. He earned a B.S. in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma. currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Smart Electric Power Alliance and is presently Vice Chair of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association\u2019s Science and Technology Advisory Council. Physicist Amory Lovins (1947\u2013 ) is cofounder (1982) and chairman emeritus of RMI, which he last served as chief scientist 2007\u201319 and now supports as a contractor and trustee. He is an energy advisor to major firms and governments in 70+ countries for more than 50 years; author of 32 books and more than 950 papers; and an integrative designer of superefficient buildings, factories, and vehicles. He has received the Blue Planet, Volvo, Zayed, Onassis, Nissan, Shingo, and Mitchell Prizes, the MacArthur and Ashoka Fellowships, the Happold, Benjamin Franklin, and Spencer Hutchens Medals, 12 honorary doctorates, and the Heinz, Lindbergh, Right Livelihood (\u201calternative Nobel\u201d), National Design, and World Technology Awards. In 2016, the President of Germany awarded him the Officer\u2019s Cross of the Order of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Background<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A Harvard and Oxford dropout and former Oxford don, he\u2019s an honorary US architect, Swedish engineering academician, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (UK). He has taught at ten universities, most recently the Naval Postgraduate School (Professor of Practice 2011\u201317) and Stanford University\u2014 but teaching only topics he\u2019s never formally studied, so as to retain beginner\u2019s mind. At Stanford he was Adjunct Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering 2020\u201324, and is currently half-time Adjunct Lecturer and a Senior Precourt Scholar of Integrative Design and Energy Efficiency at the Precourt Institute for Energy. He served in 2011\u201318 on the National Petroleum Council (which advises the US Secretary of Energy) and has advised the US Departments of Energy and Defense, serving on two Defense Science Board task forces that reframed military energy affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Time<\/em> has named him one of the world\u2019s 100 most influential people, and Foreign Policy<\/em>, one of the 100 top global thinkers. Stanford\u2019s Scopus<\/em> citation analysis ranks him in the top 2% of the world\u2019s scientists. His latest books, mostly coauthored, include Natural Capitalism<\/em> (1999, www.natcap.org<\/a>), Small Is Profitable<\/em> (2002, www.smallisprofitable.org)<\/a>, Winning the Oil Endgame<\/em> (2004, www.oilendgame.com<\/a>), The Essential Amory Lovins<\/em> (2011), and Reinventing Fire<\/em> (2011, www.reinventingfire.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His main recent efforts include supporting RMI\u2019s collaborative synthesis, for China\u2019s National Development and Reform Commission, of an ambitious efficiency-and-renewables trajectory that informed China\u2019s 13th Five-Year Plan; helping the Government of India design transformational mobility; and formalizing and spreading his decades-long practice of integrative design. This way of optimizing buildings, vehicles, factories, and equipment as whole systems for multiple benefits, not piles of isolated parts for single benefits, makes energy savings severalfold bigger, yet cheaper. Fully applied, this could quintuple global end-use efficiency. Lovins aims to make integrative design the new normal, so efficiency investments can yield increasing rather than diminishing returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
