The Flower Farmer & The Florist on Instagram: "HOW TO pinch your dahlias and why? On our farm when our dahlia plants are around 30cms in height we “pinch” them. Pinching means removing the central growing tip to encourage lateral growth on your plants. Doing this results in more stems which means more flowers! Woo hoo! Your stems will also be longer and much thinner which is perfect for floristry too. We walk around with a bucket and gently remove the tips with our fingers being careful not to transfer sap from one plant to another. You can use snips too, however you will need to clean them in between your plants. Transferring sap from one plant to another can transfer potential disease and virus. In a week or so you will notice the lateral stems growing on your plant, its so awesom
Galena Berkompas • Urban Flower Farm • Education on Instagram: "Aphids hate onions. They just really really don’t like the smell so interplanting your roses, ranunculus and other plants with alliums or anything in the onion family is an easy trick to reduce aphids in your garden. Other plants they don’t like: marigolds, catnip, fennel, dill and cilantro. I’ve been doing this for a few years now and I rarely see an aphid now. The key is to plant a lot! I like drumstick alliums because they’re small bulbs but they have beautiful flowers in the garden - if you want a really cheap option, plant chives or green onions through your beds. I’ve also heard that they keep voles away for the same reason… but I haven’t tested this in depth yet so take that with a grain of salt. Fall is the BEST t
Idlewild Blooms | Dahlia Farm on Instagram: "Be a rule breaker with me 👇 💗 Conventional advice for dahlias is you shouldn’t fertilize them with nitrogen. Some people say this makes them grow too much foliage and not enough blooms. 💗 I go against that advice and fertilize my dahlias with a generic 10-10-10 (or 16-16-16) fertilizer every two weeks until they are loaded with blooms and then reduce it to every four weeks. 💗 My dahlia plants (as you can see) are enormous and bloom like crazy. They also make fantastic tuber clumps. After all, a large plant REQUIRES a strong root system to support it. 💗 Plants love nitrogen. It keeps them vigorous and healthy. Feed your plants like you would feed your people! Don’t skimp.✌️"

Dana Carpenter | Houseplant care on Instagram: "Trailing plants looking a bit scraggly or bald on top?? Try this simple solution! 👇👇 All you need are bobby pins or hairpins! 🙌 Instead of letting long vines hang and make your plant look imbalanced, wrap them around the top of the pot to instantly create a fuller appearance. Use bobby pins to secure the nodes (those little bumps where roots and leaves form) into the soil! Over time, the nodes will take root, absorbing moisture and nutrients to strengthen the plant and encourage new growth. Just keep watering and fertilizing as usual. Can you believe the difference 5 months made for my golden pothos?! Save this post to try it with your trailing plants! And share it with a fellow plant lover!! 🪴💚 . . . . . #goldenpothoscare #beginn
S O P H I E V A L E N T I N E on Instagram: "What to do with Dahlias… Lots of questions about what I do with my dahlias over winter so here we go! This is what I do with mine in about November time. You can leave them and they probably will be ok (depending on your soil and the winter we have). If you don’t want to risk loosing them then lift them like I do. I store them in a cardboard box of wood shavings in my frost free garage over winter. Keeping them dry is very important 👌🏼 What do you do with YOURS? Kristine Albrecht - Dahlias on Instagram: "Yesterday, Martha Stewart published an article on dahlia propagation covering tubers, cuttings, and seeds. The article is titled "How to Propagate Dahlias for an Unlimited Supply of Beautiful Blooms.” This is good news for new growers because understanding these three propagation methods' differences, benefits, and drawbacks can be confusing when first learning about dahlias. The article also covers basic early-season plant care tips, such as protecting against slugs and snails and pinching out young plants for better bloom production. Thanks to Martha and Samantha Johnson, who wrote this article. . . @miraclewelsh #santacruzdahlias #dahlias #dahliapropagation"
Galena Berkompas • Urban Flower Farm • Education on Instagram: "A slowed-down version of how to divide a dahlia clump! You can divide either in fall or spring… there is no right way, it often is just a matter of personal preference and how you want to store them. Dahlias stored over winter in clumps often do better, but they also take more room. If you divide in fall, you have to have your storage area more dialed in but you also can squeeze in a lot more. Whichever way you choose, I get a lot of questions on how to actually divide so here you go! Important notes! •Some people like to divide the clump in half before they start dividing. This isn’t my preference, but it’s a totally valid way to do it if it’s easier for you. •it’s especially important to get part of the crown with each tub
Galena Berkompas • Urban Flower Farm • Education on Instagram: "Let’s start with the basics: Tubers - this is how you normally grow dahlias. You plant a tuber and over the summer season it will grow a clump of tubers that will then produce the same plants. Always. A Cafe au’Lait plant will give you tubers that will produce Cafe au’ Lait plants. Dahlia seeds - They never will produce the same dahlia. Dahlias are incredibly genetically diverse, so the possibility of gene combinations in seeds are endless. They might share characteristics with the mother plant, but they will never be identical. The cool thing about seeds though? It’s how new dahlia varieties get created eventually. Every dahlia seed you plant will create its own small tuber clump over the season: those tuber clumps will
Galena Berkompas • Urban Flower Farm • Education on Instagram: "At this point in the season as we move into October, I’m moving through my field and cutting down several varieties half way. Why? There’s a couple reasons: 1. Cutting down half way means that the rest of the energy from the plant can go into tuber production instead of into flowers. As someone who propagates for tubers so others can grow them in their own gardens… the tuber production is the priority. 2. I also selectively go through and cut down because I’m saving seed to do future hybridizing and I don’t want certain ones getting pollinated because I don’t want their genes in the mix. A lot of breeders do hand pollination to further control possible outcomes, but cutting down certain varieties before you let the bees pol
Kristine Albrecht - Dahlias on Instagram: "In this five-minute video, I discuss monitoring dahlia seed heads as they mature and how to check in on seed production along the way. Not all dahlias make tight, compact seed heads. Some varieties generate seed heads that are looser and more open. I show an example of one of these in this video. Thanks to @dahliasplease for the video work. . . #dahliabreeding #santacruzdahlias #krstinealbrecht"
Barb Merchant | Windfall Zinnia Seeds on Instagram: "Most zinnia growers struggle with powdery mildew at some point. It’s so common! Sometimes it seems like it’s just inevitable but there are a few things we can try to prevent it from taking over: Removing the lower leaves of your zinnias does a few things that can help prevent powdery mildew: 1- allows for more airflow between the plants 2- decreases the amount of soil getting splashed up onto the leaves from rain or overhead watering 3- makes watering without getting the leaves wet easier (if you are hand watering) 4- gets rid of older leaves that may be starting to show signs of disease 5- gives you a chance to spot early signs of disease and remove it, before it gets out of control. This might mean pulling more leaves off, or ev
Kelly Radcliff / Lazy Girl’s Garden Club/ Zinnia Lover on Instagram: "DETAILS DOWN HERE⬇️ 🌸 **Petal Test: How to Know If Your Zinnia Seeds Are Ready to Save!** 🌸 Lazy gardeners, here’s a trick to know if your zinnia seeds are good to go! 🌿✨ Before you start saving those precious seeds, let’s do the *petal test*—a quick and easy way to check if your blooms have been pollinated and if your seeds are ready to dry. Here’s how: 1️⃣ **Gently tug on the petals** of a dried zinnia bloom. I start from underneath! 2️⃣ **If the petals easily pull away**, leaving behind a firm & thick, brown or green seed base, you’ve got pollinated seeds! 🎉 Remeber they look like arrowheads! 3️⃣ If the petals are still attached or the seed base is soft & white, give it a little more time before harves
