Wizardry!
The difference between wizardry and science is knowledge. Writing and mathematics were once considered magic. Naming a thing verbally gave one power over it - writing symbols for that name gave one even greater power. Those who could manipulate numbers (like master stonemasons) were considered Magicians. Many alphabets (like Hebrew) give each letter a numerical value - texts in the Bible (and elsewhere) are full of double meanings. No wonder so many early scientists were burned at the stake!

Rare manuscript reveals dark history of witch hunts - University of Alberta
This is one of the rarest books in the world and only four copies exist now. The book was written in 1460 in one of the most mysterious Medieval European courts, the court of Duke of Burgundy, called "Invectives Against the Sect of Waldensians". This is a hunter's guide: how to recognize, capture and kill a witch or a warlock.
HISTORIC CONNECTIONS
The tablet represents one of the oldest mathematical diagrams ever found and the earliest use of the Pythagoras Theorem. Originating from the eighteenth century BC city of Larsa in southern Iraq, the tablet is part of an ancient mathematical textbook that includes a problem involving the construction of an equilateral triangle.
