Sarah | Garden Designer + Educator on Instagram: "If i had to share a quick piece of advice… one that didn’t cost much and… would give an instant lift to your garden … it would be this… Paint your boundary fence ‘black’ or ‘shades of very very dark grey’… To quite one of my boys fav movies😉 It’s a particularly effective tactic in small to medium sized urban gardens… As it helps the fence, and as a result the boundary lines recede… Which is ideal if your yard is an awkward or unusual shape… Dark fences have the added benefit of making the green of your plants in front of it pop. fence colour - Dear House I Love You

As part of our landscape remodel, we were faced with a challenge: what to do with the weather-stained fence which spanned our entire back yard. The Before Replacing it was a non-starter unfortunately, so we opted to straighten it, mend it in a few places, and paint or stain. We’ll have a large hedge in front of it eventually, once our plants fill in. For the paint, we wanted something not too thick, not too black, not too blue, not too brown… the perfect charcoal grey that wouldn’t smother…

We used the @behrpaint house and fence wood stain in the color slate. It does radiate a little bit of heat, but honestly, I’ve seen my plants explode with massive growth near the fence. I think that they like the extra heat. it was super easy to paint. We did use a paint sprayer which is the method that I would recommend. We had tried using a roller to take forever! Spend $100 and buy a paint sprayer off of Amazon. Trust me! We bought the Home Right paint sprayer and it’s amazing.
