I love, love, love shirring! It's so easy to do and doesn't require a whole lot of thinking. I've had an awful headache all day and this project was actually soothing. To Practice This You'll Need: sewing machine thread elastic thread big scraps of fabric First, hand wind the elastic...

two pairs of pink pants with ruffles on them

For many people, elastic waistband is a synonym of comfort. Most commonly seen on skirts, pants and dresses, a garment with elasticized waist is easy to pull on, will stay in place all day and live with your body. Elastic waistbands also allow for small variations in fit and work great for most body types....

Below is a tutorial on how to shirr with elastic thread. Before we begin, I must mention that this is a compilation of shirring techniques which I have learned from 3 specific resources: Portabellopixie, Craftstylish, and Heather Ross's book Weekend Sewing. And away we go....... Supplies ~ 1 spool of elastic thread ~ matching thread (must match your fabric) ~ fabric (i used Robert Kaufman's Kona Cotton Celery) ~ 1/4" elastic (optional) Instructions 1. Finish the upper raw edge of the bodice…

someone is sewing fabric on top of a piece of cloth that has been folded in half

I have been using this method to sew elastic waistband for many projects. I have seen this in many mass produced garments and must admit it is the quickest and easiest way to sew elastic waistband. It is not only easy but also a great way to keep the elastic from being twisted when you pull it up (my 4 year old son does this all the time with inserted, not sewn in elastic). The only downside of this is you cannot adjust the length of elastic without ripping the whole thing off. This tutorial…

the fabric is being sewn on to an old sewing machine

I received a handful of questions about using elastic thread in the pleater. Yes, you can do it. Martha Pullen even mentions it in her Pleater DVD. I have found there are a couple of tips that make it easier. 1. Cut your pieces of elastic thread about 2 inches longer than needed so you can tie off the rows. 2. Make sure you thread the needles with a needle threader...then only pull about 1 inch of the thread end through. 3. When you have started pleating the fabric and are pulling it off the…
