In Ireland, blue is considered to be a very important color. It's not always all about Kelly green, in fact green was considered unlucky and might entice malicious fairies. Blue symbolized purity in ancient times before white became the universal symbol for virginity.

Handfasting ceremony - a tradition in Celtic betrothal or wedding ceremonies. The term is originally from Old Norse 'hand-festa' which means "to strike a bargain by joining hands." So considering I'm Irish, Scottish and Norwegian, it's perfect. :) But I would probably use a tartan scarf or something rather than just a rope.
