Once again I've been going down painting rabbit holes and admiring some beautiful work. This week has been focused on Ingres. This particular portrait was painted so Ingres could get out of his commitment of painting a portrait that was commissioned 7 years earlier. Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, like many painters of his time, wanted to be known for historical paintings as that was considered to be the most highly respected genre for painters.
