How NYC’s gay bars thrived because of the mob
The Mafia is SO gay! Before the Stonewall incident, homosexuality was illegal in New York. Likewise, mob activity was outlawed. Queer circumstances make strange bedfellows: Organized crime apparently paid for gay speakeasies, including the Stonewall.

An examination of the 1969 series of riots over police action against The Stonewall Inn provides a background of the mob-controlled Greenwich Village gay bar, the political and social elements that contributed to the riots, and the event's impact on subsequent attitudes. --Baker & Taylor
Storme DeLarverie fought the police in 1969 at the historic riot at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village and helped kick off the gay rights movement in the States. Some writers believe Ms. DeLarverie may have been the cross-dressing lesbian whose clubbing by the police was the catalyst for the riots (the woman has never been identified).

Hunted and often entrapped by undercover police in their hometowns, gays from around the U.S. began fleeing to New York in search of a sanctuary. Hounded there still by an aggressive police force, they found refuge in a Mafia-run gay bar in Greenwich Village, the Stonewall Inn. When police raided Stonewall on June 28, 1969, gay men and women did something they had not done before: they fought back.
