In recent illustrator mentoring sessions, diversity in children’s books has come up a lot, and as part of that discussion I’ve been talking through the ways I mix watercolours for skin tones. Do you guys remember that detective show Monk? There was an episode when he was sick in bed and had both a humidifier AND dehumidifier running so he could create the perfect level of humidity. I realized this week that I do the same thing in my studio. If the humidity dips too low, my oil paints dry too fast to work with. But if it’s too humid, they take ages to dry.
