According to Herbert Norris, "Tudor Costume and Fashion," " The dress is of black velvet, entirely covered with a trellis-work of pearls, with sapphires in gold mounts set at the intersections; the spaces in between are embroidered with a design in gold."

Tudor fashion of the mid-fifteen hundreds was influenced heavily by fashions of Italy and France. In this fashion plate depicting Catherine de Medici, the sleeves emerging from a puff or roll at the top and rapidly becoming close-fitting down to the cuff were called "French sleeves" in England.
