Enwiki command and control

[eedit soorce]

An RFC on a proposal to create a new user group with an abbreviated set of administrator user-rights, as an option for administrators to request instead of requesting removal of the entire sysop user-right package.

(in Inglis) In my view, enwiki badly needs a low-wattage admin classification that is subject to oversight by the fully-fledged administrators, as now configured.
Such an admin could issue a two-day block, for example, to attract a malefactor's attention.
Then the overseeing admins could decide whether more or less was warranted.

Hello, Bzweebl. Ye hae new messages at Varlaam's collogue page.
Message eikit 23:07, 17 Januar 2013 (UTC). Ye can remuive this notice at ony time bi remuivin the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.[replie]

(in Inglis) I had to set up this template anyway.

Descartes

[eedit soorce]

(in Inglis) Dualism would appear to be fundamental there.
I would prefer to see you do the parts you can, while leaving the rest for someone else to have another go.
Please restore the paragraph, and impose your revisions on it while leaving the remainder intact.

Okay, thanks. I think I'll learn more before I try editing again. Bzweebl (talk) 02:01, 18 Januar 2013 (UTC)[replie]
No, no, what you did was pretty darn good, truth be told.
The problem was chopping out the stuff you couldn't find in the OSD. It was the OSD, right?
"bad edit" it most certainly was not. I would have said "2nd attempt".
Restore the bits you translated; they were first class for a beginner.
Just leave all that "dual" stuff in place for when a native Scots speaker with a double major in philosophy and math comes along. (Yeah, in 2023.)
Three points:
  1. cheenge: OSD lists cheenge before chynge. If you run searches here for those 2 spellings, you will find a whopping disparity. The originators of this project, for whatever reason, liked the spelling "chynge". Glance over at the menu on the left. It could be as simple as it's one letter shorter.
  2. namely: My reaction was, "Say wha?" Search for it; I got 0 hits. It's in the OSD, but no one has used it here. Why? (This being Scots, maybe it's here but spelled "namly" or "namelie".)
"Famous" is usually translated as "famous", or possibly "kenspeckle". Do a search for kenspeckle and see if its usage, in practice, suits your situation.
  3. ane: Now, when you looked up "soul", did you see a distinction between "saul" and "sowel"?
Similarly, "one" is tricky. It can be "yin", "wan", or "ane". Around here, it tends to be "ane", but the word has two forms. (Check the OSD.) "Ane" is the stand-alone pronoun: "ane oot o 100". But as an adjective, it's "ae": "ae beuk". And "ae beuk" is distinct from "a beuk". Again, run a search here for "ae" and satisfy yourself that that is how it's used.
The cardinal rule of Wikipedia is, Be bold!
You're doin' fine. Varlaam (talk) 03:21, 18 Januar 2013 (UTC)[replie]
P.S. How do you pronounce your user name?
It reminds me of an ad when I was a kid, "Weeblies wobble, but they don't fall down."
Varlaam (talk)
Yes, I have been using OSD. Kenspeckle does seem to fit in Descartes' context, and I'll try to be more careful about usage for similar words, as I was a bit careless in that, and will be sure to look into words I am unsure about. My original edit was done a bit hastily, so I thank you for your corrections. Thanks again for your encouragement and your overall work at this encyclopedia.
I'm not good with IPA, but my username is pronounced Beezweebel. It was briefly a nickname of mine many years ago.
