In 2020 I randomly discovered Sylvia Hinz’s “Windserie I – VII” recording on bandcamp:

After an incredible listening experience, I emailed Sylvia, asking her to be involved in my PhD research, which in the first place would involve her improvising a bass recorder solo to a no-input mixing board sound-score. Much to my delight she agreed and, a few months later, sent me a beautiful ten-minute recording which I have spent the last five years pulling apart and putting back together in order to create a musique concrète tape-score for Sylvia to play solo with/against.
This track METAL was born out of absolute frustration with the difficulties of composing the tape-score, and entailed me “throwing” Sylvia’s original recording into four virtual turntables and maniacally improvising for half-an-hour.
Despite many conversations over the years, I have never met Sylvia face-to-face, but after listening carefully to the sound of her breathing for so very long, I feel that I have really got to know her on a whole other level of artistic tenderness.
