What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?
Autism Spectrum Disorder encompasses a whole range of developmental challenges, including impaired social skills, intellectual disabilities, repetitive and compulsive behaviors, and difficulty with both verbal and nonverbal communication. Since ASD looks a little different for everyone, children and teens with autism may show a wide variety of symptoms.
ADHD and Time
Managing time is an executive functioning skill that's a problem for many of us with ADHD! One of the tips/strategies I recommend to my clients is to use a visual timer to help judge time. When we see that an overwhelming job will be "contained" to a few minutes, it can make it easier to get started when motivation is running low! For more tips, check out my podcast on ADHD and Time.
How to Support a Child with ADHD
Provide structure through schedules and routines. Give positive reinforcement and praise. Allow movement outlets like exercise. Use timers and reminders. Break tasks into smaller steps. Reduce distractions and external stimuli. Teach organizational skills. Remain patient and understanding. Build their confidence and self-esteem.
