A buffer stop, also known as a stopblock (in the U.S.), bumper, or bumping post, is a device used to prevent railway vehicles (i.e. locomotives, coaches, freight wagons) from going past the end of a section of track. Typically, a buffer stop's design is dependent upon the kind of couplings used by the railway, as the coupling gear is the first part of the vehicle that the buffer stop touches.
