The Mary Celeste was an American merchant ship famous for having been discovered in December 1872 in the Atlantic Ocean, apparently abandoned despite the fact that the weather was fine and her crew had been experienced, able seamen. The Mary Celeste was in seaworthy condition and still under sail heading toward the Strait of Gibraltar. Her cargo was untouched and the personal belongings of passengers and crew were still in place, including valuables. The crew was never seen or heard from again.
Eight days after setting sail from New York with 10 people on board the Mary Celeste was found adrift in the North Atlantic in 1872. The ship was largely intact: six months of food was untouched, the crew’s belongings were in order and though tossed about, the ship’s logbook and some charts were left on board. Why the sailors, captain and captain’s family left the ship and what happened to them thereafter remains a mystery as neither the lifeboat nor any bodies were ever found.
