Association of Women for Action and Research: Singapore's leading gender equality advocacy group.

About us

AWARE is Singapore's leading gender equality advocacy group. AWARE believes in the rights of women and men to make informed and responsible choices about their lives, and to have equal opportunities in education, marriage and employment, and in the right of women to control their own bodies, particularly with regard to sexual and reproductive rights. Since its formation in 1985, AWARE has carried out research into numerous issues affecting women, including workplace harassment, poverty of older women and Singapore's compliance with UN anti-gender discrimination standards. AWARE's Support Services provides crisis counselling, legal advice to women in need and the newly established Sexual Assault Care Centre offers support to victims of sexual assault. AWARE's public education arm consists of youth-focused outreach campaigns and a corporate training arm, which offers training on workplace harassment, unconscious bias and diversity and inclusion. AWARE is a not-for-profit organisation. We are funded by donations, grants and member subscriptions. We are a registered charity with Institute of Public Character status, so all donations to AWARE are tax-deductible.

By encouraging open and honest conversations about menopause, we can empower working women to make informed choices about their health, ultimately enhancing employee satisfaction, reducing absenteeism, and improving productivity. Got 5 minutes? That is all it takes to give your opinion and shape a panel discussion with healthcare professionals and thought leaders who want to improve health practices at work. You know that feeling when you're doing a million things at once? It's exhausting. In 2023, AWARE provided over 2,900 hours of support to women facing some of their hardest moments—whether it was trauma, caregiver burnout, or the overwhelming mental load. This October through the end of the year, we’re raising awareness about mental health and aiming to raise $20,000 to keep these essential services running. Your donation will make an impact: https://lnkd.in/gQbWjNYq

Did you know that all of AWARE's helpliners, legal clinic lawyers and board members are volunteers? They, alongside other volunteers with expertise in writing, design, event planning and more do so much to advocate for women's rights and gender equality in Singapore. We held a Volunteer Appreciation Programme last Saturday to show how much we recognise their time and contribution. Congratulations to Sutheshna and Douglas (volunteers on the last two slides) who won a customised treatment voucher at Bioskin and a photography session package with Invertigo Studios respectively!

At this year’s Power/Play 2024 Ball, we were honoured to have two of Mama on Palette's artists, Ayda and Irina, contribute their extraordinary talents to the cause. Ayda’s striking painting ‘LOVE’ and Irina’s evocative ‘Red Lipstick Palms of the Botanic Gardens’ were auctioned, raising $1,500 and $2,500 respectively. Their contributions played a key role in helping AWARE raise an astounding $1.1 million, supporting their continued work to promote gender equality and justice in Singapore. We are immensely proud of Ayda and Irina, who, through their art, have demonstrated how creativity can fuel change and make a real impact. This event stands as a testament to what can be achieved when artists and communities come together to support a shared cause. Together, we are contributing to a future where everyone is treated equally, and we are grateful to be part of this powerful movement. Swift action means everything to survivors facing sexual harassment and #cyberbullying online. We are encouraged by PM Lawrence Wong's announcement on the creation of an agency that will quickly tackle online abuse. We hope to see this agency tackle all forms of online harm, including sexist and misogynistic content, and cover all platforms, including messaging apps.
